Can't we all get along ok u both have cool cars and are smart lol hopefully everyone is happy why the drama ain't this a place to help people and sped some knowledge around and show off ur car a little or did I join for the wrong reason lol

3 on a tree was always a problem for me. Two of my first cars had tree shifters. A 3 speed Plymouth and a Simca with 4 on the tree. (Never figured out why Simca did that, but is was a piece of junk)

I drove my uncles '65 chevy truck my senior year of HS. everyone wondered why i didn't peel out or get stupid and after they realized that it jammed up and i had to manually unjam it they were all confused.
easiest engine to work on though. it was all right there. nothing fancy....
and that thing would run solid. even with the gas fumes in the car since it was basically the backrest in the cab...

The Caddy jammed up on me terribly while pulling out of a Walmart parking lot one afternoon. Would not come out of second gear for love or money. Lucky for me the 346 ci flathead was built for torque, not horsepower, and she motored on down the road stuck in second! Got it home and beat on the linkage with a rubber mallet until it came loose. A little grease and some loose fasteners cleared it right up. I think Peugot had a sedan with a FIVE speed tree shifter in the eighties (euro market) I bet you'd get confused driving that mother around town!
How long before this degenerates into " I know you are but what am I" LMAO To keep this thread within a mile of on topic: What i love about the column shift is what i miss most in modern cars, that being the direct mechanical linkage between shifter and transmission. A properly executed shift feels like closing the action on a bolt action rifle, nothing in a modern car comes close.

3 on a tree was OK for regular driving, I think most people back then at least knew how to drive them. I, for one, was never able to speed shift one, but with the Simca and Valiant they were in, it would not have made them any faster. When I got my first floor shifter, with a "massive number of gears", (4) , I thought I had hit the jackpot.

honestly for me in the chevy the best part of the 3 on the tree....once i hit 3rd i could leave it there and rest my arm on it.
the bench seating had no armrest....actually it wasn't much a seat by the time i got it. some pillows, some stuffing and a seat cover and it was frankenstein'd to make it feel good enough.
and i confused the shit out of so many people riding because they'd be like "oh it's automatic, wait why do you have 3 pedals?"
"that far left one is the brakes back up brake"
"what???"
i will say the lack of power steering was a pia at low speeds for parallel parking but once you hit 20-25 i never really noticed a difference. and that jamming up sucked for me b/c it was sometimes random and my hometown was mostly hills
so the people behind me usually regretted tailgating me.

Geez, yeah, I forgot that most of those tree shifters didn't have power steering or brakes. Guess that's why we didn't have to make too many trips to the gym back then. Got all the muscle training just from steering and standing on the brakes.
lol and it don't know if it was just mine, but i also topped out at 60 mph....unless i was going down a hill.
but imo the A/C was soooo awesome.
Step 1 Open side vents

I destroyed a 52 Chevy DeLuxe cab pickup driving 55 when one of the stupid babbitt rods started knocking. It was one of those 3 on the tree that would jam up at only the most inopportune times and places. I got my first ticket in it 40 in a 30.
