I've posted this info on the New Zealand Hondas site, but I thought some of you here may appreciate the info too.

Purchase cost: $21,726 (I chose a few extras)

Current value: Agreed insurance value $9,045 - 42% of original price.

Kilometers driven: 158,907 km

Fuel used: 8,415.08 litres = $11,009.21

Average fuel cost in three years $1.31 per litre.

Average consumption: 18.9km/l or 53.6mpg (Imperial)

Service costs: $3,600 (10,000km $120.62, 20k $176.48, 30k $156.65, 40k $351.00, 50k $128.81, 60k $184.75, 70k $199.13, 80k $387.36, 90k $309.30, 100k $268.43, 110k $198.71, 120k $426.78, 130k $261.80, 140k $214.13, 150k $217.51)

Insurance cost per year: $323 (AA fully comp, full credits etc. I'm 46)

Tyres: Ten purchased. Original Yoko Aspec tyres lasted 60,000km on the front. Replacement Dunlop Monza 200s lasted 45,000km. Dunlop SP300E on the front lasted 50,000km. Currently has four Firestone TZ100 tyres.

Faults or unexpected repairs: Right rear wheel bearing. PCV valve. Rear numberplate mounting nuts. Manual gearbox input bearing. Both rear wheel bearings (the right was re-done as a preventative.) All warranty replacements. Two Headlamp bulbs, one tail lamp bulb, one high-mounted stop lamp bulb. I paid to have the clutch replaced whilst the gearbox was off - as a preventative. The battery lasted six years before it got tired.

Total running costs (excluding depreciation): $20,225.25

Average cost per km: 12.7 cents per km

Average weekly running costs: $55 Pretty good hey?

It is still using the original wiper blades, front brake pads, rear brake shoes.

The car is still excellent, and I still hope to keep it for 10 or 15 years of this type of use.

In the last 12 months, I drove the car 13,630km, and only refuelled it 21 times.

My girlfriend has now moved from 74km away to 600m away from me, so I'm expecting my Jazz usage to drop to about 8,000km per year. A far cry from the 40,000km I did for each of the first two years. There's a rumour that my office might close, and I may need to relocate to another building 65km away, though. Boo!

The last tankful was mostly around my local town, with the aircon on. It took 38 litres to fill it up after 679km = just under 51mpg (Imperial)

Great job! That's about 42.168 mpg (US).

What engine do you run if you don't mind me asking?

 

It's a 1.3 i-DSI - the twin-spark one. Manual gearbox.

The "lifetime" fuel consumption average works out at almost exactly 45mpg (US).

I've had many types of cars, including Jags and Mercs, yet this Jazz is probably the best designed, engineered and built car I've ever owned.

Can't say the same about the fuel consumption though. I drive the nuts off mine on trackdays so my lifetime fuel consumption isn't anywhere near 45 mpg.

Great seeing your battery last 6 years too, mine barely lasted three. I had to replace mine two months short of its third year in the car as it was beginning to have problems cranking.

This Friday will be expensive, though. It's due the 160,000km service (the biggest one here in NZ, with the plugs and air filter being changed) and I'm having the brake fluid flushed and replaced.

But most of all, they recommend the valve clearances are checked and adjusted at 100,000km or 78 months. My car is 160,000km and 84 months, and they only told me about this a few months ago....

The cost of the valve clearance work is NZ$310 = US$220. I pointed out that the spark plug replacement and the valve clearance work partially co-incides, so they're not charging me labor for the plug changing.

Their quote for the whole lot is NZ$750 = US$540

Sounds like too much for a tune up. I would check with a small shop too, or maybe even do my own adjustment. Does it require new shims? If not, the adjustment is easy.
