Meet Your ATF Filter!

So I would post this in the DIY forum but it's also important for people to know who have their A/T Fits serviced too, so posting it here. I've read a lot of threads here where people have said the FIT A/T has no filter.. they are wrong. Now you know.

It seems Honda service staff and mechanics are too lazy or don't care enough to know there's a serviceable transmission filter on most Honda models since the early 2000s. They did this after reliability nightmares, mostly on the V6 Oddyssey and Accords, and these filters are a good thing (and usually easy to service). The bad thing is that Honda doesn't put a replacement interval on them in the manual, but they are cheap ($15-20). On my '05 accord I4, the filter is inline with the transmission cooler line above the trans, and the Honda Fits from 07-10 show the same design. Here's a pic of the '07 ('09 and '10 very similar (filter is #5). By the way, don't ask me how to get to it on the fit. On my accord it's easy, but it appears to be under some stuff on the fit. Enjoy.

Workign at a dealership I know your frustration. Some of the newer parts/service people jsut say there is not one. It is just not a regular service item. Majority of the time it is serviced when your Shift/Linear Solenoids need replacing.

Yeah for excessive maintainers who do atf drain/fills every 30k, they should do the filter at the same time.

I wonder if I should change the filter when I hit the 40K mark. I'm at 37K right now.

I just replaced the trans filter for my 07 Fit at 50K , you need to remove the battery tray because the filter is underneath. The part cost around $14 and you need three quarts of fluid. To be quite honest 50k is too early, I cut the filter open and their was no evidence of sludge or silt. This was my second fluid change, my first was at 25K . Just make sure you have the radio code because you will need it after you hook up the battery.

I changed the ATF filter today, was curious as to what the filter looked like inside. Found some pics that were posted on an Accord forum showing the filter material & internals of the ATF filter : Changed my ATF filter today ('05 K24) - Drive Accord Honda Forums

Link works fine for me. I didn't open up the filter but someone on that forum in the link did. I'd say it was pretty easy to get to the filter itself (need to remove battery & battery tray) but a 7 out of 10 pain in the ass to move the hose clamps that are on the filter. Just not much room to fit pliers at the right angle in there.

This IS an ATF filter, despite what your friend says. I called a local dealership to purchase the filter but the guy kept insisting that the car doesn't have a ATF filter. However, if you look at any diagram for the Fit online, or in a official Helms Fit manual, there is indeed an ATF filter and instructions for replacing it. It's mindblowing how many people who even work for Honda don't even know the filter exists to begin with.

It's part #5 in the OP's diagram. It sits right on top of the transmission next to the fill bolt.

AT Fluid brands/type?

I'm running a low boost kit right now, it's auto also. Is there a higher performance A fluid I can use, instead of Honda's brand? I was told I cant use any other....???? Any recommendations?

I think the only other brand you can use in a Honda A/T is Amsoil... not sure though.

The only approved fluid for a HONDA is Z-1 period. If you are still under warranty thats what I would use.
