I am going to use Amsoil XL5W-20 at my first change. With an Amsoil SDF13 filter. Synthetic oil is good for breakin. I know that a lot of people think they know the right way to break in a motor. Just like most everything else in life there are usually more than one right way to do it. I plan on leaving the breakin oil in the car as long as Honda says to, then going to the Amsoil. After the warranty is up I might swich to the Amsoil 0W-30. A lot of high end cars have Mobil One as factory fill for breakin. Mobil One is good too. I don't think there is any reason to change it early because of metal particles from ring seating. I know that has been said to be good but how do those particles get past a filter and do any harm? If the filter is any good and doing it's job it should catch anything that would damage your engine. There shouldn't be anything wrong with changing oil too early either, other that the fact that you are wasting your money when you do. You can protect your car and get long life out of your oil. Todays oils and filters are better than the ones in the past. So are our cars and engines. If a person has any doubts they should just go with the OEM recommended oil and filter. No problems with that either. I just believe that the synthetics are better.

I am going to use the Amsoil 5W-20 Because that is the recommended viscosity for the Fit. I understand it is for all Hondas. Supposedly to help with fuel mileage. After the warranty period I might try something different. Amsoil claims their 0W-30 will get as good MPG as 5W-20. If I had a motor problem under warranty I would want to be able to say I used the right viscosity. I will also change it according to the maintenance minder. I know that Honda can only recommend service grades but I don't want any arguments.

Right, Amsoil is synthetic. There are some differences between synthetics. There are two different types with pros and cons for both. Both are usually better than "dino" oil. Good filtration is probably more important than the type oil you use. Premium oil combined with premium filters is the best. Do a little reseach about particle sizes and construction of filters and you will learn some interesting things. A good air filter helps keep particles out of the combustion chamber also. A filter that allows maximum air flow has to letting more particles past. Filtration and lubrication are critical for long engine life.

Some of the non-synthetic oils lubricate well and if you keep the oil changed regular your engine will last with them too. I understand that the additives break down slower in the synthetic oils. That will give you longer drain intervals. I found something out about a van that Dodge sells. The Dodge Sprinter. It has a Mercedes diesel motor that has its own maintenance minder like the Fits. The oil change interval with non-synthetic oil for that eninge is 10,000 miles up to 20,000 depending upon how hard you drove it. That van is large and can still get up to 30MPG.

I used to use synthetic with the long recommeded service life (10,000 mi?!) but got too worried about the filter life. Back to the regular routine.

DON'T CHANGE THE ORIGINAL OIL BEFORE THE RECOMMENDED INTERVAL. YOUR ENGINE NEEDS IT FOR PROPER BREAK IN. IIRC, DON'T CHANGE IT BEFORE 5000 MILES.

Synthetic oil is complete overkill for this car no matter how much you're reving the motor.

People really need to do some more research on lubrication topics.

Havoline 5W-20 and an OEM filter are all you need.
