Five star for the front seat, three for the rear. I was hoping for better rear seat ratings.

Kinda dissapointed in the rear ratings.
Corolla has 4 stars in the rear without rear side airbags (and Civic has 5). The kids will sit in the back, and that means one on each side (and one in the front).
No parent wants to survive a wreck if a kid does not.

Quick comparison:
Car - Frontal driver/Frontal Passenger/Side Front/Side Rear
Honda Fit - 5/5/5/3
Hyundai Accent - 5/5/5/3
Honda Civic Sedan - 5/5/4/5
Scion xA - 4/4/4/4
Scion xB - 4/4/3/4
Toyota Yaris - Unrated
Toyota Corolla - 5/5/4/4
Toyota Matrix - 5/5/3/4
Toyota 04 Echo 4/4/3/4
Chevy Aveo - 5/5/4/4
Mazda3 Sedan - 4/4/3/3
Kia Rio - 4/5/3/3
Dodge Caliber - 5/5/NA/NA
Not terrible, but not the best either. Interestingly, exactly the same as the Accent. The Civic definately is ahead of its class though. Will add whenever I see someone mention a relevent car, these are the main competitors anyway

Since when is the passenger front more safe than the rear? One of my big considerations in buying my Fit was to make it easy for my old lab to get in and out of the car. Now I have to worry about how safe he is back there!

Keep in mind the front and side star ratings are weighted differently. 3 for the side is the same chance of injury as 4 on the front.
From safercar.gov
Front Crash Ratings:
5 Stars = 10% or less chance of serious injury
4 Stars = 11% to 20% chance of serious injury
3 Stars = 21% to 35% chance of serious injury
2 Stars = 36% to 45% chance of serious injury
1 Star = 46% or greater chance of serious injury
Side Crash Ratings:
5 Stars = 5% or less chance of serious injury
4 Stars = 6% to 10% chance of serious injury
3 Stars = 11% to 20% chance of serious injury
2 Stars = 21% to 25% chance of serious injury
1 Star = 26% or greater chance of serious injury

Hmmm...
Maybe I am not getting something here, but are we not talking about the cheapest and most basic Honda available in the world?
This car is better than everything standard in its class. You are as safe or safer in this car than in most SUV's of a few years ago. You can store as much in them too.
I don't want to criticise anyone, I don't mean to, but I think that Honda has a problem with giving people so much more than they originally expected, that they start thinking about what the car doesn't do in comparison to other, more expensive vehicles, and stop comparing the car within its class, because that would be boring.
It may be human nature though, to compare an apple to a carameled apple (metaphor here) and lament no caramel. I am just saying, compare the Fit to anything in its class (B-segment cars) and you will find you are safer in it that anything else out there, period.
If you bought the Fit for safety only, you would never have bought it. If you bought the Fit because it is the safest vehicle standard in its segment, with the most utility of any vehicle on the road up to small SUV's, and a go kart-esque fun to drive experience, then you have made an excellent decision.

Again, I would like to point out that a rear side impact rating of 5 stars can be attained without rear side airbags. It seems to me that the car body structure is more important than the addition of rear side airbags.

The 2007 Yaris is actually "safer" than the Honda Fit. The body structure of that car is newer and is designed in a similar fashion to Honda's ACE technology. The Honda Fit body structure predates ACE, and therefore isn't up to today's standard.
