Just tried Royal Purple Synthetic oil on my Fit.

Because the Mobil 1 synthetic oil and royal purple synthetic oil cost the same. I figure I should try something new.

One of the guys I work with used to work for Acura. He told me thats you can start changing your oil around 4500 or 4750 miles or earlier because of some additives that coats or do something to the internal parts.....

 

What did he do for Acura?

 

He was a auto technician there.

Since the Fit is an 07. I was not sure if pep boys or autozone carries oil filters for the Fit. So I got an OEM Honda filter.

 

I thought he may have been an Acura corperate employee, not a dealership employee. Dealership personnel (I used to be an auto dealer technician) hear the over-maintenance sales pitch so much they get to believing it is necessary.

 

I just picked up an STP S2808 oil filter at Autozone...$3.19. It was very highly rated in another thread in one of these forums.

So I guess my question that everyone is kind of dancing around is when to do the first change. Im at 3200 miles and it just clicked down to 60% oil life about 50 miles ago. Should I do it at 3750 as the dealership wants me to schedule (free lifetime changes), or wait till the oil life drops to 10%. If it continues at that rate it will be about 6800 miles. Just seems like alot with the break in oil running (even though its apparently special oil for the break in). I also think that when/if I sell this car it will look almost neglectful for waiting till then...any thoughts?

 

The FIT uses the same oil filter as the Honda Accord V6 2005. Use that as your search when looking through the catalog.

I really wanted to try Penzoil Platinum 5-20 Syn, but I couldn't find it anywhere locally. So I've bought a 5 liter jug of Havoline 5-30 as it is high in Moly content. I will be switching it out at 2500 Miles. I also bought Motorcraft 5-20 Syn-Blend from walmart and will be running that shortly after. After that, another change with Castrol Syn-Blend 5-20 before going to full synthetic.

 

I just did my oil change this saturday and the milage was 4900. Since it is my very first brand new car. I also used Gunk oil cleaner (I think thats whats its called) and Red line fuel cleaner. I always use these because its always good to clean out the system the best you can. I have used them for years and I like them. If you have not tried them, give it a try. If you don't like it you can always go back.

 

I used to hang out at this performance shop and they used Royal Purple on almost of their cars. They did a test on a WS6 Trans Am and dynoed it changed engine oil, trans fluid, gear diff lube to all Royal Purple products and it gain 17HP on the dyno. A lot of people people change filter at 3-4K and top off then change oil and filter at 6-8K. From what I have always been told you should wait a little while (~5K) before you go to synthetic oils.

 

I have been changing my oil @ 5K with dino oil for several years, never had an engine failure. On the Fit I plan on following the maintenance minder, which means I will change it every 6K or so (I'm at 4.5K with 40% oil life remaining, plan on changing it @ 15%). The manual says specifically not to change the break-in oil early, so I wouldn't. That being said if someone else is paying for your oil changes why not change it every 3750. If you change your oil early and reset the maintenance minder how will you know what other maintenance needs to be done and when?

 

Yes, the STP oil filter is very good, as is the Mobil 1 filter. Stay away from the Fram filters, as well as the Honda filters (except for the japanese made filter that is not available in the US or Canada) as they are cheaply made.

Not sure where I saw it (try a google on Honda oil filter comparisons), but they did not fair that well.

 

Thats why you put it in your service history book and write down everything you did. So on your next oil service you can perform whatever comes next or what you think is best because you drive the car everyday and should know what to look for like: tires, brakes and other fuilds....

Also, if anybody has looked into it, Royal Purple has a very good additive packages and, in my opinion, is almost as good as Mobil 1 in this department.

One thing you can do to any oil that you use is add a little CD-2 Street Legal High Performance Oil Booster to your engine oil of choice. It will work well with the high moly Haveline oil previously mentioned, as it adds a ton of Phosphorus, Zinc, and Calcium to the oil. This stuff is in a pink bottle and is really cheap for what it gives you! Around $2 a bottle! I use some with every oil change!

If you use a good filter and good oil, there is no reason in the world why you can not go 7500 miles between changes. If you are worried about it, there are plenty of places that you can send your used oil in and get it tested to see how your engine is wearing.

 

Here is a great article on oil filters for Honda's! It even talks about oversized filters (holds a little more oil and a little more surface area on the filter material) that may or may not work on the Fit.

Dude.. why?? You don't need those on a brand new engine. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Most oils already contains detergents and you wouldnt need anything unless your engine was acting up or had sludge. As for fuel injector cleaners, those are usually for injectors that are clogged or if the rings aren't properly sealed.. The additives contains seal conditioners that softens them so they can swell up to close up any leaks. Continue the use of them and they will eventually soften so much causing it to be fragile to the point of ripping. Don't use any additives unless you are fixing something.

For something you can safely use on a new car, check out the Street Legal CD2 oil booster (pink bottle) which contains agents to keep the oil from becoming acidic. You can pick this up at Big O Lots for $1.00 a bottle.

 

Don't be telling everybody where they can raid my stash!! LOL!


Not all of the Big Lots have this, and some charge $2 a bottle instead of $1, but even at that price it is a good investment!

Many car maintenance items are "scheduled" (the Fit has no written schedule, due to the schedule being contained in the software of the "maintenance minder") not just "what you think is best because you drive the car everyday". If you reset your maintenance minder early you will not know what the "scheduled" items are (The numbers and letters for the "scheduled" items are not displayed until the maintenance minder displays 15%). Personally I go with the recommendations of the engineers who work for the car's manufacturer, not "what you think is best because you drive the car everyday". But hey it's your car so do "what you think is best because you drive the car everyday".
