When did your Fit have its first Oil Change?

My dealer recommended at 5000 miles.

I usually get oil changed every 3000 miles.

I've heard of people getting the very first oil change as soon as within the first 1000 miles during the break in period.

What say you?

the first batch of oil NEEDS to stay in there for a minimum of 5k. The engine will not get the proper coating otherwise. Dont change it at 3k. Hondas dont need changes every 3k anyway.

proper coating? i believe you mean the engine will not be properly worn in.

as for how long the break-in oil NEEDs to be in there, each to their own. this is a highly debatable topic.

you will notice there have been several threads on oil change and break in procedures already.

no, i meant proper coating. The first batch of oil is a special blend that has additives in it that "coat" everything with a more permanent lube. When you change your oil, you wont use this blend.

i guess this is the similar reason why you like coated bulbs as well.

please elaborate where you find this information about the additives that permanently "coats" the cylinder walls. i am interested in where you find your facts.

The dealer stated an oil change within 3 months (in August) or 5000 miles. At the rate this car is being driven it will be barely 2000 miles by August.

All of the other oil and break-in threads discuss the special formulation of the break-in oil in you new Fit and the manual advises you to not change the oil too soon. You're supposed to use the oil life % indicator. There is a lot of debate about this subject on FitFreak if you go a few pages back.

For the people who have had their Fits long enough, what did your odometer say when your oil life indicator told you to get it changed?

The 'mileage at first oil change' could be made into a poll.

Do you remember what the oil life indicator said when you were at 1000,2000, and 4000km?

Also wondering why you change the tranny fluid so often?

I was told to wait until the oil life percentage indicator drops below 15%. My Fit is at 3950 miles and still has 70% left. Guess I've been driving like a granny...

It specifically states in the manual not to change the oil the first time until 5000 miles. I would think that Honda knows what they're talking about, and I see no reason not to follow their recommendation.

my salesman told me to change it at 6500 because the intial oil has some stuff to help the engine break in, from then use regular oil for the first 1 or 2 changes then you can start using syth.

I haven't changed my oil yet, but at the current rate of oil wear (as indicated by the maintenance minder) I will hit 15% at aprox. 6000 miles.

This is the additive that earlier posts were referring to.

I will probably change my oil at 5k, then another 5k, then probably run a Used Oil ****ysis to see if I can run 7k.

But if you are concerned about when to change it, take the oil from the dipstick and rub it against your finger. If you feel grit then its the shavings off the new engine, and you should probably replace the oil. Or take a drop of the oil and drop it into a cup of water.. If it beads up like a nicely waxed car, then its probably still good. If it seeps into the water, then it is probably full of mosture and the lubrication is exhausted.

Uh? So Honda engineers must be fools to print into the owner’s manual something as foolish as leaving the oil in until the maintenance minder tells you it’s time to change the oil. Off all things, these people are far more educated on this subject. New cars burn much cleaner, and fewer contaminants end up in the oil. How many Honda engines have followed the recommended change intervals and had oil related engine failures? Likely very few.

Some people still get milk delivered to their door each day, we go to the grocery store and buy milk that’s pasteurized and has a longer shelf life without going bad.

My Fit has over 4200kms and the maintenance minder just dropped to 70%, mine spends a good amount of time on the highway for long periods of time. A co-worker drove over 10500kms in his Civic before the level dropped under 10%. I’d love to see the oil get ana-lysed when the maintenance minder reads 10% to see if the Honda engineers know what they are doing. Uhmm, I think I’ll be doing that.
