Farewell fir freaks

I traded the fit in tonight for a Subaru Outback. I needed something more comfortable for a 100 mile round trip commute, and getting the fit stuck three times in the last week (today being the worst) in snow/mud and having to be towed out by freinds/neighbors was the straw that broke the camels back. I will miss the great MPG's, but the all wheel drive and ground clearance will come in handy around here as will the quieter more comfortable ride.

Thanks for all the info and take care everyone!

huh, snow tires with wheels $530 shipped from tirerack sounds much cheaper and more efficient but oh well.

GL!

Sorry to hear that you are stuck...would it help if you had snow tires on or the FIT has too low clearance....

Its more to do with the low clearance and the dirt road I have in front of my house. The worst wasn't the snow it was a really saturated road and the fit ended up in dirt up to the rocker panels and with only one wheel turning it wasn't helping.

This could be where wider tires might help (only slightly?) get around those fir trees, I mean out of the mud.

If you've got dirt roads that get muddy, carry some 2x4s (a pair of 1 or 2 ft long ones?)... Stuff em under any free spinning wheel. The wood would probably snap quite easily, but at least it'll provide a source of some traction instead of just lobbing mud everywhere.

We have been lucky, my wifes Forester is rapidly approaching 200K without a hiccup. I hope it continues, she loves that car to death!

I noticed the OP lived in Arizona. He/she probably had never driven in snow before. Sad to get rid of a car just because of some snow and possibly inexperience.

Sorry to see you go. Stop by to visit from time to time. We are having one of the worst winters since I bought my Fit in 2007 and I have to say that it has done well on the roads so far. I still have the stock tires but live in a very flat area where they take pretty good care of the main roads.

Farewell guys! My wife totaled my 2009 Fit Sport: K&N SR intake, Honda wind visor, LED interior & cargo lighting, cargo cover, cargo tray, Fit floor mats, etc. All the work I put in is gone. Fortunately, my wife did good homework and bargained for a good price when we bought it 2 yrs ago. And it held its value well. We actually got a few hundred dollars more from the insurance than what we paid for it 2 yrs ago. I was gonna get a 2011 Sport with MT (wife wouldn't have let me get MT if she did not wreck the car). I eventually opted for a 2011 VW Golf TDI 4dr, w/ a sunroof that I missed so much from a Fit.
Farewell! But I will return from time to time to admire the any new pics of MODS and all.

S%#@ happens, the main thing is that your wife is OK after this accident. Cars come and go... who knows, you may well find yourself in a FiT again one day.

lived in upstate new york where it snowed everyday i only got caught twice cause i got cut off and i saw more 4x4s stuck, and many of times my front end served as a plow lol and I think crvs are better. suburus are great but not for me them 4x4 parts when they go are costly i'll stick to fwd and btw had all season radials and she ran just fine with little slippage two words driving style

That's funny, I'm doing the opposite. Just bought an '09 Fit and I'm selling a '03 Subaru Legacy GT Wagon. It has 96,000 and both head gaskets have blown on separate occasions. Can't beat Subaru handling I will say, but love the Fit!

My 2010 Fit is my DD, but I decided to keep my 1995 Subaru for those hard winters. It was too dependable a car to let go. No head gasket problems with the older models plus mine is a Legacy wagon.
The Outbacks from 1995-2003 had head gasket problems.
Subie is still doing great with 156 k miles, but not so good with gas as a daily commuter

i sold a 06 legacy wagon with a list of problems and crappy subi dealer service when i got the GE back in late 2008.

i hate subaru's in general based solely on my experience. im glad to hear others are having some good experience. for snow just gets snow tires on the Fit (Bridgestone WS60's to be exact). they transform the car equivalent to AWD cars with all-season tires.
