i-DSI or VTEC in US?

I have a question for my fellow Fit owners or future Fit owners. If the i-DSI engine were available in the US, would you choose it over the VTEC?

i-DSI, or “intelligent Dual & Sequential Ignition”. This setup utilizes 2 spark plugs per cylinder. They fire at different intervals during the combustion process to achieve a more complete burn of the gasoline. This process allows the engine to have more power while keeping fuel consumption low thanks to the better utilization of gasoline. Emissions are also reduced. The i-DSI engines have a modest redline of only 6000 rpm, but reach maximum torque at mid-range rpm, allowing for decent performance without having to rev the engine at high speeds.

VTEC engine is aimed more at performance than efficiency with a slightly higher redline, which reaches peak torque at higher rpm. However, it still offers a good combination of both performance and fuel efficiency.

L15A i-DSI
  • Available in the Fit Aria, Mobilio, and Partner in Japan. Offered in the Fit/Jazz and City in certain countries.
    • Displacement: 1496 cc
    • Bore x Stroke: 73.0 x 89.4 mm
    • Compression Ratio: 10.8:1
    • Horsepower: 66 kW (89 hp) @ 5500 rpm
    • Torque: 131 N·m (97 lbf·ft) @ 2700 rpm
L15A VTEC
  • Available in the Fit, Fit Aria, Airwave, Mobilio, and Mobilio Spike in Japan. Sold throughout the world with 5-speed manual or CVT options in the Fit/Jazz and City. Canadian and US Fit models will have a 5-speed automatic instead of the CVT.
    • Displacement: 1496 cc
    • Bore x Stroke: 73.0 x 89.4 mm
    • Compression Ratio: 10.4:1
    • Horsepower: 81 kW (109 hp) @ 5800 rpm
    • Torque: 143 N·m (105 lbf·ft) @ 4800 rpm
    • Variations: L15A1 (Fit/Jazz)

Nice info, thanks. What is the fuel efficiency difference between the two?

I think I would stick with the VTEC engine. I second the wish for the CVT trans! Wonder why they did not offer that here?

Mpg

I found this fuel economy rating for the UK Jazz with 5-speed manual and the L15A i-DSI engine...

urban (l/100km) 7.3
country/highway (l/100km) 5.1
combined (l/100km) 5.8

Converted to US gallons...

city 38 MPG
highway 55 MPG
combinded 49 MPG

The CVT is not much better with...

city 39 MPG
highway 55 MPG
combined 48 MPG

Data is from http://research.cars.uk.msn.com
Converter is at http://www.eforecourt.com/l_100km_mpg_convert.htm

Interesting that the L15A VTEC isn't available in UK. Well, they desire lowest MPG possible and don't car much about power. I could not imagine the 89 HP L15A i-DSI engine here in the US. It will never happin unless it's in the hybrid and in that case they would use the L13A for even better MPG numbers. Personally, I would like more power in the fit, just as long as I can still get at least 30MPG average.

I'm using your link and I'm getting different numbers:
7.3l/100 km = 32 MPG (US Liquid gallon)
5.1l/100 km = 46 MPG (US Liquid gallon)
5.8l/100 km = 40 MPG (US Liquid gallon)

Despite saying you're using US gallons, you used Imperial gallons instead.
