Fuel Economy reading WAY off ... anyone else

Picked up a 2009 Fit Sport 5spd and I was over the moon when I saw the fuel economy display.

6.3 L/100km (37.3MPG) ... then I filled up and did the math and I actually got 7.4 L/100km (31.7 MPG) in the city with some highway thrown in.

Now even the 7.4 is not too bad (I have roof rack on there) but what gives with the misleading economy numbers? Does anyone else see this as well. When people report their fuel numbers on here ... are they going by the display or the computed number.

I've done this on several tanks now (filled it up all the way at the same gas station) and I'm seeing the same thing.

I reset my trip computer on each fill up.

Any comments, suggestions? Is this normal ... does honda just make the number look nice? I've go stock tires (so km reading is spot on).

In previous cars (Audi) I've always had almost perfect correlation between the reported number from the car and the actual computed amount.

No when you reset the trip distance it resets the average as well. According to the owners manual ... and when I reset it I can see that the Avg Fuel goes to --- l/100km ... and then as you drive it changes ...

Check with your dealer or Honda (if dealer is not Honda) and confirm that the recall was done on your car that fixes the MPG display. They should be able to check by VIN #. IIRC '09s had a discrepancy that was fixed in '10+ cars that made the meter read high.

My meter is generally accurate within about 1-2mpg of actual, i've got a 2010 5MT.

Technically not a recall. It's a TSB

Service Bulletin 09-086

The PDF is uploaded here

It also depends on how much fuel you put into the tank. I have a 2012 Fit Base AT and found this out. I always stop after the first click, but on one fill up, my hand calculated MPG was 34 while the gauge said 44. It ended turning out that I obviously got more gas into the car that day (it was over 100 degrees F so that is my best guess) as my next fill up had a gauge mpg of 45 but hand calculated of 51. When averaging out the two trips (the first one was much shorter), it came out to be very close to the gauge display. This is just something to keep in mind.

Yeah I was quite carefull to fill it up about the same both times ... I realize that they hose down to the tank is quite long due to location. The variation is about 4-5 Liters (1.2-1.4 Galons) so I that's a pretty larger error of margin.

I called the local honda dealer and they is a SW update bulletin (after he told me the US cars are totally different :-) ... going in on Thrusday so we'll see if gets better on Thursday.

thanks ...

I guess it varies. It's different consumption on traffic and wide open road. My biggest problem right now is that the car takes so much fuel at traffic.

I'm trying so hard to cut the fuel expenses. Any suggestions?

I got the ECU reflashed on my GF's car and now it reads pretty much bang on. The car is a bit thirsty in traffic for sure ... you need a very light foot. I'm getting about 33 MPG all around ... picking up a Golf TDi on Monday for myself so looking forward to getting 42-43 mpg all around ... oh that and some serious Torque (236 ft/lbs)

Idle or coast in traffic, do not stop and go with the car in front of you.

I sit in traffic for about 2 hours a day and still get 38-40 mpg. You just have to learn to not care if people get in front of you, generally they change lanes again within 20 seconds anyway

Fit Freak or should I say MPG..all good. I purchase a used 2009 Sport with 28,459 miles. When I fill up my milage meter starts at zero and then after say 10 rd miles then it starts to creep up. After about 30 rd miles. It seems to go back to normal,
so I think?. I know one thing I tried going back to it's original air filter from the K&N I have in it now. Milage did not seem to make any difference. I will say Living in Miami A/C is almost always on. In City averaging 29 mpg's peak summer Starts late May through Sept. I purschased car in early April, less heat & A/C avg city 32/33. City drive =60 & Hwy= 40 miles Total combined 33/34 mpgs. I'm Ok with that. These cars are now called the Heavey weights. In compariosn to new gas engines with more power better mpg's. Still love my Fit. I gave my son the Scion 06 XB, excellent city milage. Fit much better Hwy. Great fun cars love the utility factors.
Peace

I've had mine for about 20k miles and i've had no problems with it. Makes a little more induction noise so sounds a little cooler, it's not loud though.

Never noticed much gain in power or MPG, I wasn't expecting any, I just didn't want to buy air filters anymore.
