How Do You Mount Your GPS?

Howdy,

I am thinking about buying a GPS for my Fit.

The windshield seems way too weird to use a suction
mount and the dash does not seem to have a
suitable surface for a suction mount.

I don't want to drill the dash...

Thanks for any insights.

Jerry

I use a cup holder mount. You could also use a bean bag mount.

Garmin Portable friction mount.

Sits nicely in crevice between instrument binnacle and top air vent.
Never had an issue with it flying around, and it is in reach of my hand.
It allows the view road ahead to be unobstructed by the GPS.
Really works.

The "Tom Tom" brand bean bag holder fits perfectly on the GE8 Fit dash and holds any size of GPS unit. When you get to your destination and park, you can pick up the bean bag platform with the GPS mounted on it, then slide it on the passenger floor underneath the rear of the driver's seat (even with the back seat down and the rear floor flat). No see, no steal.

HAH! I was just about to ask this very question. I recently got a (refurbished) Garmin Nuvi 3790LMT and it comes with the suction cup mount. For the record, it also comes with a pad with sticky on one side, and totally flat and slick on the other side, the same size as the suction cup -- I believe this is so that you can stick it down to a surface that you might not otherwise be able to attach a suction cup to.

I haven't mounted mine yet.

Still trying to figure that out, and look for suggestions. I drive alone mostly so it's not like someone can access the GPS/watch it for me.

When we use the boyfriend's GPS, we put the suction cup mount on the windshield just right and slightly higher than the rear view mirror. I gotta glance up that way from time to time for the rear view anyways, and it's got voice guidance. The only problem with this solution is if it needs to be plugged in due to low battery, because we don't want to power cord going across the windshield. Usually the boyfriend just holds it in that case.

I did see a pretty cool mount that slips into the CD slot and will hold a smart phone or something of similar size. There's a thread somewhere on the forums with a picture and a link.

Stick it in one of the pods for the tach or fuel gauge!!!

like this

Covering up the tach is perfect for those that don't use the tach... but it does block a few indicators (various temp warnings).

or this

When I had it in the fuel gauge pod, I moved it as high as I could so that if the low fuel light came on, I could clearly see the yellow glow. In fact, I could see the red glow from the needle when it's low enough.

I put mine in the little window between the windshield and the driver's side window... I'm not sure what you would call it but here are a few pics.

It seems a bit far away in the pictures and I do have to lean close to the steering wheel to poke the screen but it's out of the way and it's not blocking my gauges

Edit: This forum doesn't auto-resize pictures? Bummer.

Since you have the UG, why not just set an alarm for 1.6 gallons left?

I mounted my Garmin Nuvi on a flexible gooseneck with a suction mount.

Had to use a stick-on disk for a secure mounting surface for the suction cup.

I found mine on Ebay... for a good price... the best I could find at the time.. unfortunately only a few days after I got it.. I found you could buy them from Walmart for $12 cheaper! (Although I guess I would have different sales taxes on it then..)

Here is a link to the same model I got for (currently) only $159.98 note that you can do FREE site-to-store shipping/pickup.. if you ship it to your house or business, I think you have to pay for delivery.

Check my blog for how I mounted mine in my '12. I'm using my Droid4 as my nav with Roadster2 car kit. Very good. For cross country i would use my after market nuvi mount that plugs into the socket and also acts as a powered bracket for my Nuvi.

I do the same. Gotta use the big ass dash for something useful.

I did try it out for a while and found out I didn't like the alarm. I shut off a number of alarms because they were bugging me...

Re: Ramp, actually, I also moved to an in-dash navi unit also.

I just about half an hour ago purchased a Kenwood DNX6990HD in-dash head unit from Crutchfield. Their (very good) price even includes all the mounting and connection hardware - for free! I spent like an hour on the phone with the guy, and he gave me some good tips. I got tired of having power cords draped all over the car and not being able to charge my phone while the GPS was plugged in. I work out of my car, so I think that and the HD radio were good investments for me.

I mounted mine like this (with a stick-on disk and the suction cup mount). From my normal driving position, it doesn't block any view of the road; I just can't see a bit of the windshield wipers when they're parked. It's also a reasonably convenient location to poke at the screen when needed.
