AVG MPG? How do they do it.

Just curious. We zeroed the trip Odometer for our first drive and after 35 miles of highway driving we were at 37.2 MPG. But when we got off the freeway and got into town the avg MPG started to climb towards 38.

How are they magically figuring out gas mileage anyway??

I know the above is short term but just curious.

Miles on tripmeter/volume of fuel injected. Not magic, just basic math.

depending on your driving habits on the freeway, around town COULD be better. not usually, but the fit gearing is made more for city driving. and if you drive significantly above 65mph, the fit has the aerodynamics of a brick. combine that with shitty gears = shittier MPG

ahhh - fuel injected - makes sense. I know that is not real super accurate (as proven by Myth Busters - I had forgotten about that).

Thanks

Which episode do they disprove the accuracy of the ecu in calculating fuel injected?

In later episodes they move to relying heavily on data from the computer.

The one where they are looking at what is better, AC windows closed or windows open and no AC. They had to resort to emptying the tanks completely and putting in 1 gallon of gas. They were not testing MPG but had anecdotal evidence.

They talked about how the original way of using the car computer was inaccurate. Maybe the car they were using had a different way?? They were not testing MPG

Just repeating what I saw. Not making judgements.

I'm amazed how many people on a Fit forum really hate Fits LOL

That episode measured airflow into the engine rather than fuel injected. Try again

Edit. More correctly, that used an added sensor to measure air intake flow over the car's computer, based on the descriptions I can find. Using fuel injected is much more accurate

AHHH - I thought there was something strange as I remembered "air" and a "?" went up above my head. That was why I had the original question here. There was some weirdness in my memory.

And . . .what is this "try again" Were we in a contest? or was it just you thinking we were in a pissing match or something.

Dude - calm down will ya? MAN!!!

This. Fuel consumption from each injector is read by the ECU real time and can be monitored easily.

There will be a little error margin because of refresh rates i'm sure it's a little granular.
