As I hoped for, and suspected based on the future-proof styling and the previous Fit's refresh cycle:

I don't neccesarily like the idea of Mexico construction. I have to admit I am glad my 2013 is 100% Japan. My neighbor's 2012 Fiesta was manufactured in Mexico and it shows.

As much as I hate that it's the case regarding Mexican manufacturing quality, I totally agree. Maybe things will improve down there with QC in the near future.

What I think is interesting that people might not catch when glancing over this title, is that as far as I can read into it, there won't be a overhaul on the vehicle, but rather, an expanded line, including hybrid, ev, and crossover variants.

The tuners need to start making more stuff now for the sporty, regular Fits. Safe(r) bet for them, unless the economy tanks again, or the gas version gets shuffled to the back on the lineup and offered in base trim only.

I had more problems with the VWs I owned that were assembled in Westmoreland PA. than the ones from Mexico.. Of course the ones from Germany were better.

I'm pretty excited to see the Fit's expanded line of vehicles, but I'd probably wait a couple years if I was to buy one just to see if there ends up being build quality issues.

From what I gathered from the article, it just sounds like they will also build them in Mexico, but not exclusively there. So when you go to the dealership, find one that was built in Japan. Problem solved.

Uh huh. You are aware that automakers specify that certain production runs go to certain destinations right? You will not be finding any Japan-built Fits in the US. The entire reason they will be producing in North America is, the cost of producing the car in Japan is more than the US-market $ sales amount!

That's not always true. Look at Camrys and Corollas -- the ones stateside were built in either Japan or North America, indicated by the VIN. Them being built here doesn't mean that we won't get any imported.

*Bump*

This thread should have at least twice as many views as it does right now. This is the best, most important news we've heard since the introduction of the GE. It's like the car's lifespan was just doubled. I'm very happy about this. Whatever little aero bits, and LED stuff they come out with it to keep it current, will work with our cars (in theory.) Things you already own may transfer to a new Fit also. Yay!

The Fit is unbeatable as-is when it comes to form factor. All they need to do is mess with the power plants for mpgs. The competition have all put their best foot forward, and I bet Honda is sort of surprised that nobody exactly Trumped them in the subcompact category over here. Lucky them. This strategy makes so much sense.

It's true, and it is POSSIBLE that we would get non-Mexican Fits. You're right to say they can build and sell them anywhere (assuming they're identical from an emissions/crash perspective.) But because the profit plan depends on selling NA-built fits in NA, that would likely only happen if demand in NA exceeds supply.

Or if the currency turns around. Ha! :P

Or it is possible that some special versions might still come from Japan. Like, if they ever made an SI version, they might import it.

Saw this did not hear about the sedan.

Honda, forecasting to sell a record 4.3 million vehicles this fiscal year, is planning worldwide rollouts of new Fit vehicles, including a sedan and compact sport-utility vehicle, from next year, said Ito, who’s led the company since 2009. The start of a factory in Mexico will further increase production of the Fit, known as the Jazz in Europe, for the North American market in 2014, he said.

Does this mean no 2014 Honda Fit or late arrival of the 2014?

A supercharged version of the cross over would be nice, even better with AWD... The Spoon2 car was being watched by Honda during it's development since they owned the car and had it returned to them to analyze awhile back.. Oscar Jackson stripped it of the stuff he'd put on it though.. I'm going to keep what I've got.

They make a Fit sedan now. They just don't sell it here. I don't really understand why and I would personally suggest it would be a good idea. I mean YES it would compete with low end Civics but low end Civics stink (no AC, so, literally if you eat onions on a regular basis and drive in warm weather) and there IS a market for small sedans. I see more Cruze and Fiesta sedans than I do hatches. This boggles my mind because they're so small that the added utility of a hatch seems honestly a must, but ..

In any case I think they could sell the Aria IF they chose to bring it. Personally I think this would be great since this would expand the Fit base to another slice of customers also young and interested in modifications, who are currently buying Civics

At that point, it's already too different of a vehicle than what the Fit is, and may basically overlap with another Honda.

The wife and I always pick 3 things to improve whatever car we have had. On the Fit is was the need for a 6th gear, give it the option of 4wd, better stinkin seat material. Sure, we'd like more power, but come on, it's a low powered economy car. It does it's job very well by being a reliable, time tested, versatile, fun to drive car that gets good economy all the time. Not just on a EPA type test cruise loop. Cheap to own, cheap to operate. Like a Subaru. Two of the best cars made.
So bring on the cross over. Expanding the line up may be the cheapest route to market share.

Yeah, just by adding boost, upgrading the suspension, wheels and tires a Fit becomes a very different vehicle.

We have a Forester and a Fit.. They will probably still be running strong after we are dead and gone.. I still enjoy driving a big Northstar V-8 powered personal luxury car regardless of all of the crap that needs to be done to keep it going..
