Unusual Noise When Braking

Hello Fellowship of the Fit,

I have been experiencing something odd when braking. It doesn't happen all the time, but maybe once a day. Every so often, when I brake slightly abruptly, I hear a fast paced thumping/knocking sound coming from underneath the vehicle. I read that braking hard should be avoided during break-in period, but I have over 4000 miles on it already, and this sound hasn't gone away. I don't know if it's the rear drum brakes which causes this sound, or whether it's the abrupt shifting of gears. I experience this when driving in automatic. Does anyone else have this problem? I had a Civic for 3 years, and never heard such a sound before. What is this bloody noise I hear???

There is a chance that the shoe in one of the rear drums could have broken loose or cracked, but it would make more of a screeching thumping noise. Make sure you know it is coming from the back, maybe have someone else ride in the car in the back to pin-point the location. Its always easy to misunderstand where its coming from when you are in the driver seat.

Ahh okay. That would explain it, however is the pumping mechanism of ABS supposed to be heard passively?

Take this to the dealership. However, I've read that the ABS was loud on the Fit, but I haven't noticed any abnormal sound yet.

I would say it's the ABS as well. It almost sounds like a ball joint but that would cause noise with turning as well as braking and I've never heard of such a thing on so new a vehicle. I have been doing some high speeds on highways recently and once had to brake very hard; I didn't notice any noise then...

I had my ABS turn on a couple times (gravel on the road) and it was definitely a noticeable sound. Since none of us on the board can hear what you're hearing - best to take it somewhere to have it checked out - under warranty after all

Hey thanks for the replies. I'm less concerned now, although I will take your advice and check in with the dealership. I'll follow up on this post, if anyone's interested in hearing the response I get from them.

I believe it sounds like the drums might be allowing moisture in which can cause abs to malfunction or set off prematurly, take the rear wheels off and look to see if the drum housing is loose or has a crack- if u get ambitous enough u could take the drum off right after you hear it and see if there is any condensation in the drum housing.

I have that noise too...It's actually more noticible when you break normally. I feels like springs or pumps of some sort.
Yes, definitely interested in updates. Thanks.

I hear that also, it seems louder when my gas tank is full. I assumed it was my gas gushing around to the back since the tank is in front drivers side. NOT SURE so dont qoute me on it. I went and checked to make sure everything in the trunk was secure.

If you guys figure it out, let me know.

If all else fails, just turn up the stereo and the noise magically dissappears along with every other problem.

If it's the ABS, you should feel it on the pedal...

I'd take in to the dealer and have them check it out. I don't have any thumping/bumping noises when braking no matter what the pedal pressure.

Not something you would want to check yourself as the car is still under warranty and if the dealer sees you've been playing with the brakes and something is wrong, they might not cover it saying that you caused the problem.

Yes, keep us informed... very curious as to what's causing the noise.

Good luck

ABS, mine does the same thing, the noise sounds as if it is coming from the nearside footwell.

It happens to me on the occasion when entering the driveway too. Primarily when I brake and turn sharply. If it is the ABS, you should feel it in the brake pedal when the noise occurs. At least I know it's working . I've had to brake hard enough for it to naturally kick in, and you definately know it's working then.
