Honda cars are extremely reliable. Why waste your money? I have owned five of them since 1980 and I have spent very little money on repairs. I have driven all of them, except for the Fit, at least 80,000 miles without a major repair expense. Also, Honda has been very good about extending the normal warranty when a problem arises. The automatic transmission on my 2000 Accord V6 coupe has been extended to 7 years or 100,000 miles because of a defect which occurred early on some cars. My car is just reaching the seven year mark with only 81,000 miles and the transmission has never failed to shift properly.

The only repairs I have had on the Accord was to replace the alternator and battery at 40,000 miles. The repair cost was about $300. My 1980 Accord required a water pump at about 90,000 miles. My 1989 Prelude required no repairs and I traded it at 80,000 miles. The 1994 Accord wagon also never needed a repair, and I traded it with about 60,000 miles.

Put the money in a savings account to cover repair costs down the road should something fail after the regular warranty expires. Also, you can purchase an extended warranty at the same cost at the end of the normal Honda warranty. If the car requires no repairs in five years, then use the money to take a nice vacation.

 

I'm not a big fan of warranty by lately my luck has gone wild!
my washing machine just broke down after 2 years.. so another 400 bucks pos here i come.. my lawnmower of 2 years died.. my vaccumn burned out after 1 year!.. my laptop's screen went black.. something is burnt out..
i don;t have extended warrenty on nay of these items.. and i have a feeling that there's a good chance my fit might die right afte rmy warranty passes...
i figured for 700.. i have peice of mind for another 3 years...

 

I bought one extended warranty on a subaru and it was just not worth it. I had a problem with the syncro in the transmission and my mechanic was completely upfront -- "I'm being told to just take it apart and put it back together. It will stop the grinding, but it needs to be replaced and it will just come back." That was at 75k on a 100k warranty. At around 95k it came back again and we went through the same exercise in futility. And then at 110, again the grinding is back and the warranty is over. So for me it solved nothing. They were more interested in nickel and diming me over a part (and no they wouldn't let me pay for it, I asked the second time) than they were fixing it correctly.

That's made me very very wary of ever getting another warranty.

 

Maybe your bad luck streak, if you believe in such a thing, is over! The only one of those items that I would get an extended warranty on is the laptop computer. Their moving parts are very delicate and dragging them around from place to place just makes them more susceptible to failure.

Also bear in mind that the powertrain warranty is now 5yrs/60miles.

A lot of peeps doesn't seem to know this.

 

On the other hand, if you don't already have road service such as AAA, it also includes road service and towing...so if a road service plan is $50 year and you bought an 8 yr extended warranty...$400 could be considered as road service (of course only on that car) and $530 for the actual warranty. I got this for my college graduate daughter, just for peace of mind. And I've never heard of Honda pulling the crap like rebuilding a transmission if it really needed replacing because in the long run it could cost everyone more, including them.

 

We've owned six Hondas in the last 22 years, and our experience is the same - the extended warranty is not worth it. The salesman made a pitch on the extended warranty when I bought my '92 Civic EX 4 dr sedan, so I actually looked into the details and reviewed the service records for our '84 Civic wagon and '86 CRX. Not one of the very few repairs we had done to either of those cars would have been covered by the extended warranty. In addition, a few problems that occured after the factory warranty expired were covered by Honda anyway!

Maybe the extended warranty has improved since '92, so it may be a good buy for some people, but my standard answer now when I hear the extended warranty pitch is "I'm buying a Honda! Why would I need that?"
