Snow Tires

I live in Westchester, NY and that means lots of snow and lots of hills. I'm looking at investing in some snow tires for the upcoming winter. My service guy says they will cost about $150 each but to save money I could just do two snow tires on the front.

Do you think this is a good idea? Would two snow tires be just as effective as replacing all four?

All four snow tires or none...

It would be stupid to have good traction in front and bad in rear. What do you think will happen? The back of the car will snap in possibly the worst situation...

I second that. If you don't have adequate traction on all 4 corners, you'll just be waiting for that spin-out to happen.

I find 150$ each a little high. I use 14" rims in winter and my tires were 66$ each from tirerack and I got michelin x ice which is considered on of the best. I recommend finding some used rims or steel wheels and having your winters mounted on rims so you can easily change your wheels when the time is right.

You get more life out of your tires too since you only run them part of the year. I've had my winter tyres for 2 winters and they still look brand new!

Nokian Hakkapelita, michelin x ice, and bridgestone Blizzaks are considered among the best but there are other brands also!

Nokian Hakkapelita is probably the best winter tire you can get though not the cheapest.

^^ completely agree!!

even normal all season tires you want to put the good pair in the back contrary to many beliefs. grippy tires only in the front is asking for spin-outs.

I went with 15" steel wheels and 185-65 x 15" General Altimax Arctic snow tires for my '15 EX. The total cost for 4 was $600 delivered to my door from Tirerack (the shipping is what kills you with Tirerack-over $100!!!).

The upside of this is that I don't have to have tires removed and remounted/balanced twice a year, so the wheels will pay for themselves in a couple of years.

Now, all I need is some snow.

Careful what you wish for. You east coasties always seem to get some pretty big storms.
