The Fit saved itself from destruction

So here I was driving 27-29 mph down a kind of busy residential street with a posted speed limit of 25mph. This street has no stop signs but there are other streets that are perpindicular to it that do. My wife asks for my wallet so she can get some cash out of it and I give it to her. It didn't take more than a second but as soon as I looked up a car was in front of me. She apparently ran the stop sign. I stomped on the brakes and the ABS started working right away. All you could hear was thump thump thump thump thump and I stopped about 3-4 feet before hitting the stupid car. This must have been a 30-0mph stop within 15 feet.. amazing.. not even a hint of squeel from the tires. I'm getting to love this car more and more every day, although it's not mine (my wife's). I drive a 1992 Civic hatchback with a bigger and better motor than what it came with from the factory. We just bought the Fit 3 days ago too! It would have been a tragedy if it weren't such a great and safe car.

Lesson learned.. don't give your wife your wallet.. lol

ABS is designed to prevent the tires from skidding, or locking up. In the aviation world the same type of systems are installed on Jet aircraft but are called "Anti-Skid". I think the autombile industry didn't want the liabillity of someone thinking the system will prevent skids. The Tires squeel when they lock up and the tread is being dragged on the pavement.

I was going 60 and slammed on the breaks. Apprently some ghetto stuff was going down around 495 (DC) two nights ago. Where one van was towing another... with a rope and another van behind it... I guess for the cops. Well, the rope broke... and they decided to go like 5 MPH on the high way. Need less to say, I managed to stop intime... but I think the guy infront of me hit someone. Heh, I saw that car about to rear end me... and changed lanes in time. Gotta love the breaks.

I had a Corolla driver suddenly changes lanes right to left right into my Fit on a 35mph street, and nailed the brakes as hard as possible swerving left (there was a concrete barrier to the left!) and narrowly escaped by inches on both sides. I don't think they ever even knew...
