How much should I pay?
How much should I pay?
Looking to buy a new 2009 Fit Sport Auto (no nav or options).
MSRP is $17,820
Invoice is $17,211
Actual Dealer Cost is probably around $16,900
I was thinking about a target price of around invoice. Does anyone think I can do better than that right now in Hawaii?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

i'm pretty sure you're gonna be looking at a price higher then that over here in hawaii. remember the car has to travel further and the average dealer markup that i've seen in hawaii is atleast $2000+

If you have Costco then deal with Gunnar at Windward Honda. He has a set price no haggle.
If you have a computer (of course) then email each dealer for an internet price- also tends to be no haggle. I know Tony Honda will try to give a decent price for internet.
Tell them what color and what model (base vs Sport) and automatic.
Then if you don't see any price that is good enough.
Go into a dealer and tell them you will buy today IF they can sell at-
$100 over dealer invoice or whatever you want to offer. Of course they will counter offer and if they don't budge then walk out and give them your phone number but be prepared to walk.
If they are motivated they will call you or stop you from walking out.
If not then try another dealer.
I think you might be able to find one for under MSRP because they are in stock and the insight is getting some attention now.
go to all 3 dealerships. go to pflueger, tony, and then go to gunnar. you will probably buy from gunnar. I did, I got the best deal out of the 3 and he actually knew the car, the other salesman were just that, do anything to sell the car kind of guys. gunnar actually took care of me and made sure i knew everything about the car. and there was no bs headache haggling to do, he let me decide everything and didnt try to push me or sell me on bogus stuff.
now maybe i just got unlucky at the other dealers, so dont buy anything until you check all the dealerships.

The Friday paper is your key. Often times the dealers will use an ad car for cost or very close to it. Remember read the fine print Honda adds another destination fee to the total. You can also bargain via internet then you can haggle from home. My Tony contact moved to Saturn.
The whole year demand has been weak, gas prices were not as bad until now and supply was up.
This means you can bargain and should.
When I went to Gunnar at Windward (by appt only!) he would not bargain at all on the 2008 Fit Sport AT. He wanted $1000 over MSRP and there was no Costco price on it because supply was low at the end of 2007.
Now if there is a Costco price then you get whatever it's at. No dealing.
Everywhere else you can negotiate. Like Price.com
Don't be a wimp. Each location has an internet person.
If you wait for the ads then go to the library and pull last Friday's auto ad and look at the Honda ads for any low ball price but it might be for a Base not Sport and MT not AT. Or could be for Lease not buy.

Other thing I heard is to wait for the credit union sales. I think Tony has them once in a while. Get pre-approved and go down with a reasonable offer. . . I think you've got a decent chance if you shoot for $17 out the door. My friend got a 09 Sport from Tony a few months ago for a good deal, I'll ask him when he gets back from vacation.

Julie Kurashige?
Talked to my friend, he said around $17,800 (not great but pretty much MSRP + destination fee) at the last Credit Union sale at Tony Honda. If I recall correctly he was upfront about not paying the regional cost adjustment and was ready to walk if they didn't drop it. If you know someone though, probably not necesarry to go the harsh route.
Good luck!
I can highly recommend using the Costco auto program through Honda Windward (Gunnar).
Just picked mine up literally last night and I was very happy with the deal I got. No haggling necessary.
Be aware though: Honda Windward does automatically add their "protection package" to all their cars. It's a $550 package that includes floormats, trunk tray, door edge moldings, wheel locks, and rear bumper thingie.
You can get a car without that stuff on it. But would have to wait for a shipment to come in from Japan as they add it by default to all their new cars.
