The M5 can indeed do that. Several years ago, it was THE fast four door vehicle produced. I don't know if the M series is governed -- typically, German cars except for Porsche are governed at 155mph, BUT performance versions (such as AMG cars) typically ship ungoverned.

Someone in my grad school program interned with Audi and got to drive an ungoverned S8 that had belonged to a top executive... they got it to an indicated 290 kph (180mph)... the speedo was probably a bit optimistic, so let's call it between 160 and 180mph.... and this wasn't even the current generation.

it seems that the driver of that m5 had made some posts on M5Board.com. His username was americanm5. here's a link to a news article
FHP focuses on teen's role in deadly Marion County airstrip crash -- OrlandoSentinel.com

and a link to the board discussing the accident, where they started to figure out it might have been a member on their boards.
Airstrip Crash- Florida- 5 killed- 2008 M5 - The Unofficial BMW M5 Messageboard (m5board.com)

and a link to one of the threads started by the teenager, Josh i think is his name.
Rough shifts-M mode - The Unofficial BMW M5 Messageboard (m5board.com)

i didn't read more than one page of all this so i may be wrong about some things. but it seems he was telling people on the boards that he owned the m5, and asking questions about how to get more power out of it, etc. this is a really sad situation =(

Really? That just confirmed the kids stupidity. I know I am numb to it because I see so much of it, but it is true.

Actually, it turned out much better than it could have: the kid could've wiped out perfectly innocent people in another vehicle.

Moral of the story: If the phrase, "Hey y'all, watch this!" can be uttered, you'd better stop what you're doing.

The Short, Deadly Story of a Kid and his M5.*

Read that. they talk about the last thing he says(On M5post) before he kills him and 5 others in his 08 M5. Very sad.
