so with the movie, can you just have english dub? or can you turn on eng subtitles while they speak japanese? i understand a little japanese and i like watching it the way its supposed to be.
Ahh, you should've just stuck with the anime, the live-action movie sux in my opinion. It strays from the story in a number of ways, the characters behave differently (since when is Takumi's father an abusive drunk?), the story is choppy and paced badly, and, unless you have the Japanese dubbed release, it's in Chinese as it's originally a Hong Kong flick by Andy Lau. Now, the language thing may not bother many people, but in my case since I know Japanese it really makes it weird feeling to see a story about Japanese in Chinese. Also, the only Japanese person in it is An Suzuki who plays Natsuki (edit: this actually isn't totally so, but the others are generally in minor roles), and if I recall, all her lines were dubbed in Chinese making it doubly odd. Good things though are the cars, which are spot on, the drifting scenes, and the location which is really in Hakone and the actual locations ID's author used for the manga.
BTW, if you really dig ID, go do a search for Wangan Midnight which is currently running in Japan as a pay-per-view series on satellite. Two eps. a month come out and they're up to about #13-14 I think for this month. It's also being released on DVD they're about a month or two behind the tv releases. Really good story in a much darker vein than ID, and also done by the same animators as ID too, AND produced by Keichi Tsuchiya, so it knows to stay true. Check here for releases, there are fansubbed versions available: Tokyo Toshokan :: #tokyotosho @ irc.rizon.net :: Torrent Listing Do a search for just 'wangan' and you'll find what you need.

haha takumi's father was always an abusive drunk! his dad hit him for crashing into the guard rail. and then right before he raced in the rain deathmatch, he says "i cant crash the car, or dad will hit me". children getting beaten is just funnier when in cartoon form.
i do like the cartoon alot, but now ive seen all of the episodes and i want more!

Yeah, he does whack him a bit, but it's different in the movie, you'll see. Still, it's a must see whether you love it or hate it when you're done though.
Definitely check out Wangan though, it's really good in its own way and the story is very different altogether -- more along the lines of "I won't stop running the Wangan until I die.", and the obsession that comes from it and the need to beat rivals etc. ID has some of that in it obviously, but this looks at the dark side of that more.

i just watched a few episodes of wangan midnight, its really good. i could only download the episodes with no eng. subtitles so i half understood it but watching those without subtitles helps me with my japanese alot! thanks for the recommendation!

the movie is only about the 1st stage
got the movie in the mail today and i have to say, you all were right. it was soooo cheesy at times and the character dynamics suck! itsuki shouldnt have been a spoiled brat and bunta should have been more like a teacher. i like happy drunk bunta, not "i hate the world because my wife left me" bunta. the race scenes were rad but this movie doesnt come close to the animated series. i give it one thumb up and one thumb down.
