i have a question
is the $199 price for new activation and qualified upgrades only? i don't currently qualify for an upgrade so i'd hate to wait in line only to find out i have to pay retail
PS: salt to the wound - my GF is a REMAX Realtor, we get our data plan + unlimited text for $40.00/month - this price also applies to the soon to be released 3g iphone. on top of that we also receive a 10% discount on our total monthly bill

So I got a 3g 4 days ago and love it except for the cell coverage. I've already dropped more calls in 4 days than i did in 2 years with t-mobile. I use it for my business so that sucks. I do love how I can access my gmail accounts though. I just found this app on autoblog and will probably buy it soon. Review to come this weekend.

Canada lags far behind many countries as far as cell phone usage goes, an international study of telecommunications published Monday found.
The market research firm TNS Canadian Facts of Toronto said it polled 16,000 people between the ages of 16 and 60 in 30 countries and determined the global average for using cell phones was 80 percent. The biggest users were in Britain, where 97 percent of people polled used mobile phones. In the United States, the figure was 90 percent.
However, only 69 percent of Canadians used cell phones, the survey said.
Canadians do not have the same attachment to and reliance on mobile phones as the rest of the world does, said Michael Ennamorato, a senior vice president at TNS. Making calls from land-line phones in Canada is relatively inexpensive and many Canadians think that the quality of land-line connections is superior to wireless.
Canadians also hang on to their cell phones longer than people in other countries. Along with people in the Netherlands, they tend to keep the devices for at least 3 1/2 years, about a year longer than average globally, the survey indicated.
Apple will concentrate their sales efforts where they will move the most units. That means Canada is way down the list. That's also the reason Canadians were not able to get their hands on the first iPhone.
As far as data plans, well, the network has a cost attached to it, and Rogers has a specific profit model. When you factor in a low subscriber base, each user will pay an inflated rate. In theory, if you increase the subsciber base, you can spread the costs over more accounts, and the rates should eventually go down. But we all know how the CellCo's work, right?
