What would you guys buy if you had the money, they both cost the same and they will be used for home defence and some target shooting. Note: the ar15 I can only shoot at a range 40min from my house but the 45 range is 15 min away.
I already own a 9mm and .38 if that helps.

Ar15

While both would be a good home defense gun a shotgun might serve you better in the home. If you are going to use something as a defense weapon you should practice and train with it as much as you can. That being said I would vote for the 1911 as you will probably shoot it more often.

Oh the AR is a badass weapon for sure! You can't knock a 1911 though it's just as iconic as the AR if not more! I own both and absolutely love them both. My decked out AR is my favorite rifle I own and my 1911 is my favorite of my pistols. Like I said you can't really go wrong with either but consider this, you can't carry around an AR concealed like you can a 1911. Either way you go you are going to be happy I'm sure.

With your California gun laws, I guess you can say you aren't open carrying a weapon.....your car is!

I carried both when I was in Vietnam.. The M-16 got a bad rep for jamming up when one of the companies in 1/9 took 100% casualties and half of the friendly KIAs were found to have been killed while clearing a jam.. The problem was due to the use of Ohlin ball type powder in the ammunition instead of Western Winchester stick type powder that Stoner had designed the weapon to fire... I have seen a guy with class 3 license run over 2000 rounds through a CAR-16 without an incidence of jamming... The cool thing about the 1911 A1 was that the NVA were terrified of them and stop firing to hunker down when they heard one popping off during a fire fight... My issued weapons were a Ka-Bar knife and 1911A1 but in areas where there were large concentrations of enemy the .45 would get shoved into a flack jacket pocket and I'd grab an M-16 from the first casualty to be loaded into a helicopter and evacuated... Having a sidearm made you a more important target.
