Photography: Good camera to start out with?

Hey guys,

I was looking around at a few cameras and was wondering which cameras you guys would recommend. Not really sure where to look.

DSLR?
or a high end digi?

some of the ones i was looking at were:
Canon PowerShot Pro Series S5 IS
Nikon COOLPIX P80
Nikon D40/D60
Olympus SP-570UZ

Want to keep my price range below $400

What do you guys think?
I want to be able to use the camera for basically anything

i'd go with the d40/d60. i have a d40 and i love it. easy to use and a great intro dslr.

the canon xsi is another option as well but i'm a fan of nikon.

thanks guys
i was leaning towards nikon with canon being a close 2nd

where's the cheapest you can find a d40 or d60
because i see most of them in the 600-1000 range and i don't want to pay that much

this will be my bday present most likely it's november 17th

so i'm leaning towards the d40 since it's more entry level and it's the most versatile camera from the looks of it and it's cheaper than most of the Canons

I would not recommend buying from those websites.
The Nikon d40 is great SLR and also the Canon XT or the XTI. You could probably check out the nikon forums or canon forums on deal or sometime guy that are selling they gears, for great deal....

I would go with a cannon rebel XT it is an older camera but you can find them for like $400-430 at target. I have an XT and I love it it is a good camera especially for beginners it is relativley cheap and easy to use. It doesn't have as many features as something like a d60 or an xsi but it gets the job done quite well the first link is to some pictures I took with my camera, the second one is a link to probably the best an cheapest photography shop on the net.

Weather its over priced or not, its still a better camera then the D40.
Go compare the features. Leave price out of it..

I still love the D40 though.

werd. but based on price, the xsi is way out of the d40's league. the xt or xti is mroe at that price point.

ifprice doesnt matter, how about a canon 5d,or 1d. you get what imtrying to say? tyler, u know i gots love for the fit community. i dont want this to be another "hateon solbrothers" thread

I got my D50 with 2 Lenses for $700 awhile back. D40 sounds like a good entry level. Just get a nice piece of glass.

D40 for $400 @ Staples
D40 w/2 Lens for $515 shipped @ Amazon
