Earth Song ***VID***
Earth Song ***VID***
After the events of the last few weeks, I started looking into the music of Michael Jackson. I found the following song and video. For some odd reason I had never heard nor seen the song or video.
I don't want this thread to turn into a debate on his personal choices or lifestyle. I am not here to comment, condone, promote, defend, or condemn the man.
This is simply my thoughts on this particular song and video. And I would really appreciate it if we kept the subject to that. If you wish to start another thread where you extol his virtues, or you crucify him, then by all means you have the right to do so. Somewhere else. Please keep it out of here.
Enough of that.
The song.
I have to say I have never been more moved by the words, melody or visualization of any other song like I was the first time I heard/saw this video 2 or 3 days ago.
The message is clear. The visuals stunning and disturbing in their frankness and atrocity. The words, direct, poignant.
I have read where this video was met with much criticism over the depiction of MJ as some kind of Messiah figure, cleansing the Earth. I don't see that at all. I don't know where you would ever begin to find that kind of message in the video. It doesn't appear to me that it is because of him that the restoration is taking place. He seems to be as much an observer as the natives. At least that's the way I see it.
So what does this song mean to you? How do you feel when viewing it and hearing it?

What about sunrise
What about rain
What about all the things
That you said we were to gain.. .
What about killing fields
Is there a time
What about all the things
That you said was yours and mine...
Did you ever stop to notice
All the blood we've shed before
Did you ever stop to notice
The crying Earth the weeping shores?
Aaaaaaaaaah Aaaaaaaaaah
What have we done to the world
Look what we've done
What about all the peace
That you pledge your only son...
What about flowering fields
Is there a time
What about all the dreams
That you said was yours and mine...
Did you ever stop to notice
All the children dead from war
Did you ever stop to notice
The crying Earth the weeping shores
Aaaaaaaaaaah Aaaaaaaaaaah
I used to dream
I used to glance beyond the stars
Now I don't know where we are
Although I know we've drifted far
Aaaaaaaaaaah Aaaaaaaaaaaah
Aaaaaaaaaaah Aaaaaaaaaaaah
Hey, what about yesterday
(What about us)
What about the seas
(What about us)
The heavens are falling down
(What about us)
I can't even breathe
(What about us)
What about the bleeding Earth
(What about us)
Can't we feel its wounds
(What about us)
What about nature's worth
(ooo,ooo)
It's our planet's womb
(What about us)
What about animals
(What about it)
We've turned kingdoms to dust
(What about us)
What about elephants
(What about us)
Have we lost their trust
(What about us)
What about crying whales
(What about us)
We're ravaging the seas
(What about us)
What about forest trails
(ooo, ooo)
Burnt despite our pleas
(What about us)
What about the holy land
(What about it)
Torn apart by creed
(What about us)
What about the common man
(What about us)
Can't we set him free
(What about us)
What about children dying
(What about us)
Can't you hear them cry
(What about us)
Where did we go wrong
(ooo, ooo)
Someone tell me why
(What about us)
What about babies
(What about it)
What about the days
(What about us)
What about all their joy
(What about us)
What about the man
(What about us)
What about the crying man
(What about us)
What about Abraham
(What was us)
What about death again
(ooo, ooo)
Do we give a damn

C'mon man, you've got to give more than that lazy answer. Why is it a favorite of yours? What about it means what to you? Type more than the requisite 10 chars per post.
one of my fav song cause it reflects everything that we are doing to mother earth and how one day there is gonna be an end just like Revelation in the Bible says..so be ready for it....cause it might happen in our times...dont think im a religious nut..caus im not..I Just believe it
Thank you so much for elaborating your feelings.
There are a few songs that I think were lost in the shuffle for most because they may have not be released as singles (so no radio air-time) or the super-hits overshadowed them.
For me the epitome of his ability as a singer/songwriter can be found in the following songs:
Stranger in Moscow
Man in the Mirror
You Are Not Alone
Earth Song
Remember the Time
Human Nature
This video and song are also quite moving. They really depict the loneliness that can creep in on you and weigh you down.
