You'll be going through more towns on 101 but definitely a scenic route through the redwoods and shorelines. Can't cruise 70-75 though.

Gahhhhhhh this is getting annoying!

I'm on the 101 in Seaside, OR. Its going way too slow, lower speed limit and the drivers going below that! I came onto it to enjoy the so called beautiful scenic route... you can't enjoy squat, if you're crawling behind a huge ass RV.

Add to that, the stupid law of no self service gas... Seriously? I don't mind having an attendant pump the gas, I do mind handing over my credit card and possibly needed info to use it.

Alright, I'm gonna drive down a few more miles, if it doesn't improve... off to the interstate. Might then give it a try again some ways down.

Is it me, or does stuff in states with no taxes, costs just as much or more than states with taxes? I mean, i actually feel like I'm paying more overall here.

Oops forgot to warn you of the RV's. Everyday is Sunday to them They're enjoying the view of drivers like you getting frustrated.

Yup can't pump your own in Oregon.

Be cool man!

My first gas station job was pumping gas. The idea of self-serve was at least a decade away. I know NJ doesn't allow it today either. Back then washing the windshield was expected and the girls wore skirts.... I enjoyed those days. Learned a lot about 'checking' the oil as well.

It's a long coast line you're on - sit back and enjoy.

Okay, I'm annoyed at the website. I just lost everything i typed... a second time because of an expired token.

@ rest area north of Eureka, CA.

Passed one of the "drive through" redwoods, hope there are more further along south, else have to decide whether or not to drive the 30 miles back north to Klamath.

Okay... gonna finish this post here, and hopefully be more awake in a few minutes.

Greetings from... the I-5?!? Northbound?!?

Hehe, no, I'm not lost. What I had planned was to take hwy 299 to the 5, then 36 back to 101. But I missed the 299 exit. Actually, I just flat out forgot. I wanted to see what the deal was with the 36, since it was mentioned as a twisty road for motorcyclist to enjoy. While im in a car, I did enjoy it.

One thing though,,, I honestly thought it was going to be shortish....took three hours!!!

Now, to take either the 3 or 299 back and try to go to that Shrine drive through tree or drive on log. Hopefully, before they close. Then see how far toward San Fran I can get. I want some clam cowder, and some CRAB!!!

I might be able to get into SD by tomorrow night, if i push it. But that would be about it... i'll have just enough energy to walk in the door and pass out. But at the same time, I don't want to stay over night anywhere else once I get to SoCal. Gahh. Too many fun detours!!

Greetings from... a Denny's in Fort Bragg.

I just ordered, so I'm waiting on my food... second meal of the day.

Today... is crazy! As I mentioned earlier, my "little" detour involving the 36 and 299, ended up using most of my day, and it didn't help that I did it backwards, which costed me another two hours (going through Eureka twice! Other way, misses Eureka entirely). But those two roads are great driving fun, if you can take it without other cars on the road or construction. Its got sweeping curves and fast switchbacks. The 36 also has a small section curves, that aren't as sharp, but they include bumps and hills. I think I could've gotten some air on a few of them... if i were going faster.

Got some pictures of the Fit going through the redwood. I would've posted from there, but the signal was flaky. I took the 101 until i came across Highway 1, and took that.

It was going great... until I slid the front passenger wheel off the pavement into a small ditch, while taking a left curve. The corner dropped instantly, smacking the under body. That went for about 2 or 3 feet (I left some scrape marks on the white painted line), before the dirt levelled up with the pavement raising that corner back up. I have no idea how I avoided shoving that corner of the car into the mountain side!!! The bumper has scrape marks from the little trees/bush/whatever you call it. I see some bent sheet metal, but can't be sure it simply wasn't that way from the factory. I can't detect any other damage while the car is in motion... though I did hear metal like sounds once in a while... it actually seems too clear sounding (not muffled like hearing an outside source from inside, with windows close)... so, I'm wondering if its not the sound of ice hitting my soda cans in my cooler.

For the moment, I'm assuming the car didn't suffer any damage.

What a week. Spin out on a track, and now this. Wondering, if I should just head back to the dull and straight interstate.

If I stay on the 1, I'm going to take even longer to get to SD.

I doubt that you damaged anything by straying off road.. These little cars do fairly well going over and scraping most anything except tire treads chunked off 18 wheelers.... It does sound like you are getting a little bit tired, so be careful.

Stick to rt1, you'll take a bit more time, but it's a stupendous coastal highway - a classic. Would be a shame to miss it. Keep 'er on the road Goodz!!!

Greetings from... Palo Alto. I'm sitting in my car while parked in front of my sister's place. I figure I'd do whatever before I knock on the door and wake them up.

I took HWY 1 all the way to some road called Tomales-Petaluna... then I gave up and just followed the GPS toward PA. I had it set to avoid tolls, but I ignored my GPS and took the Golden Gate bridge anyway... $6! I was supposed to take the right exit immediately after, but didn't and suddenly found myself in San Fran proper, so i decided to see if I could find the apartment building she used to live in (she and her husband actually still co-own it with a friend of theirs). Then I took off and found their current house in PA. I found it... not bad considering I don't have the address and haven't been here in some 4 or 5 years. I remembered there was a Fry's Electronics within walking distance, so i told the GPS to take me there, then I just detoured when i got close.

Oh, it had plenty of scars, as vtecfit can attest to.

Oh, I'm VERY tired. I took a short liitle nap while I was on HWY 1. Something like 20-30 minutes... and I let the Fit idle the whole time. Still managed almost 40 MPG!

Speaking of tire treads... the other day, an SUV lane changed into my lane just as there were bits of tire debris. He ran over a piece, a bit bigger than my hand and I wear a men's large in terms of gloves. Anyway, his tire picked it up and flung it. It came down right in front of my driver side headlight. Then my front tire picked it up and flung it again, off to the side. I saw it fly up and away, by my mirror.

Another story about running into things... as I was on the 1.. I came across plenty of animals, including a huge ass cow cow sitting right next to the road and just eating (grass?). In any case I came close to hitting a pair of small deers, both popped up into view at the same time, braked just enough for them to get out of the way. I thought to myself, at this rate... I'm gonna hit one of them.

And sure enough, as i was cruising along at about 40 MPH on HWY 1, one larger deer appeared from my left side and ran TOWARDS me! I braked too late... and nailed it in the head with my side mirror. I don't know how injuried it got, cause apparently, it was alive enough to disappear by the time I pulled around to check. Stupid deer... got smacked upside its head. I guess the park service will find out soon enough, if it lays down and dies from a head injury.

Alright... off to go wake up my sister.

I have found that having a loud exhaust system deters deer from stepping out in front of me... When my wife leaves the house in the morning driving her sedate mild mannered Forester the deer will wait for her to come to a stop before moving off the road. Your the second person out on a road trip that has lost a rear view mirror.

Yeah makes sense TC. One reason why I don't like driving the back roads at night. One thing if they're on the road but jumping in front of you man, not much time to react. Deers and cars don't mix well, specially a Fit. Reminds me of the massive Roo bars everyone has in Australia.

On the other hand, little critters, I don't try to swerve anymore. It's the swerving that causes accidents most of the time.

Years back, crossing Texas in my Alfa, I was road paranoid of the armadillo. No way would it fit 'under' the car and they were looking quite threatening. Where my daughter now lives they post signs warning against hitting Moose! Those you clip the legs and a ton of animal comes through the windshield.

Around my parts the fawn are still speckled and stupid...

Armadillos are referred to as Texas speed bumps... If you are dozing off and run over one it'll wake you up big time.... On two occasions in the 1990s I was driving at night and saw literally thousands of deer lining the road I was on for over 30 miles.... I had a face off with a big buck on a narrow twisty road one night. I was on a Honda Goldwing, honking flashing the brights on and off and the big bastard looked like he was going to charge.. Revving up the engine and dropping the clutch got him to move.

You'd freak out driving down here lately... Wild hogs are located in every county in the state. Think about it, there are 254 counties and a few are bigger than states up in your neck of the woods.

Those pesky tire alligators at night can really wake you up too. 10 years ago on the way to Georgia I hit one and thought I messed the car up. Luckily no damage.

I hadn't had my car very long when I hit a Gator on I35 after a lane change... That was 2000 dollars in damage and a long wait while I drove around in a new car minus everything plastic on the front end and back to the gas tank torn off.
