The reason for this is Gas reserve and possibly oil.
Another reason is, there was a story in economist.com / stratfor.com detailing the chinise plan of an "imaginary line", this is a defense line in which they have to get those islands to become part of that defense in case of a foreign attack.
This has been going on for a long time.
