Ranting about the import scene
HT AC forum in a nutshell.
Only subforums I go on there anymore is GDD and RRAX because there are only so many Beaks and F7 parts I can see in one day.
I mean, it's cool guys are doing stuff to their cars, that's great to see, I just wish more people would take chances in their expression and imagination. That leads back to my previous statement, because when they do, they're slammed all over the internet for it, so they play it safe.

I love simple cars as much as the next guy, but at some point, they should realize their cars look exactly like the next guy's.
That said, I've realized the internet is ruining things for me. When I see cars I've seen on the internet in person, I'm almost always let down. However, when I put those expectations out of mind; I get stoked about super simple cars. For example, a few weeks back I saw a 96-98 Civic hatch lowered on Slipstreams and thought it looks RAD.

As for myself, do I roll on knockoffs? Yup. The guy I bought them from on CL had actually purchased real BBS center caps and valve stems/caps to make them look real. I took off the caps and put some vinyl over the center caps. I can't afford real BBS LMs, but I love the look. When people compliment me on them, I say thanks, and if they say "BBS", I say nope, knockoffs.
Overall, the import scene has definitely changed from the Hot Import Night days, but ultimately, it is still mostly people making their cars how they want them. They may not be my style, but if the owner likes it, then that's cool with me.

I literally lol'd when I read that!
Well I kinda got it all lots of real Mugen parts, CF hood, yup got that tow hook going on and sticker bombed in the back but you know what! It is my car and if you hate on it or don't understand that is alright. I appreciate anyone who takes time to modify and takes that vision for their rides and makes that a reality. There will be something different around the bend and people will either take their rides there or not. Be true to yourself and live your dream cuz you only get one time to make it your own.
Well, it's enlightening to see the situation/problem you have in the US scene re: JDM parts/guys faking the funk, etc....
Meanwhile, I'm sitting in Japan buying parts from the US. I refuse to pay for domestic overpriced HKS and Tomei stuff. I'd rather import a turbo kit from Driftmotion and use Eagle rods: spend half the money, make more power, and STILL be reliable as hell.

I agree with both of your statements
I consider myself a very open-minded person and have friends in nearly every form of modified community and can appreciate the diversity
I just don't like people who are close-minded and will dismiss a car without really looking into the platform and being open. I normally see a person who has something negative to say about everything as more of an insecure and uninformed individual and disregard their opinion
With that being said I personally think there is no place for mods like this, this is where I draw the line

Things that I agree with the OP on:
Rims that look like they belong to an escalade on a compact car.
Underglow
Huge spoilers
The thing I hate the most though are the people that have dented up cars, different color paint panels, rust all over, old purple tint, yet they have a tow hook and nice rims. What's the sense of having a modded car if it looks like it was just picked up from the junkyard?
When I noticed several cars parked around town in prominent places that were sporting an assortment of underglow lights and other illuminations meant to coax a smile from what ever prize the driver was chumming for that evening, I quickly made inquiries and soon purchased a dozen or so of the tiny illuminators.
But these never found their way into the caked mud packed beneath the fenders of my Subaru and flatbed 4x4. These lights would spend the next year or so as various point-of-use lights in my solar-powered home located miles beyond the electrical grid. After several of the transformers in these tiny lights suddenly melted down and gave off the usual acrid smell associated with burnt up electronics, I quickly pulled all the rest and counted my blessings that I hadn't burned down the house in my effort to save a few watts of power in my lighting budget.
I later stumbled upon a source of 2-5 watt compact fluorescent spiral bulbs (the infant brothers of the common 13-watt spiral bulb sold to homeowners everywhere. These burn "nearly forever," seem unlikley to start a fire, are available in the Kelvin of your choice, and are extremely energy efficient.
Somewhere buried in a landfill, there is a shabby old footlocker containing dozens of failed lighting experiements ---- and a half dozen BRAND NEW underglow lights which I dared not give to some youthful fellow... for fear of setting his ride ablaze. I often think of that old footlocker which had once traveled around the world with me ---- now serving as a sort of time capsule of early 21st century strange lighting appliances.

I honestly think this is gaudy as hell. The best thing going for it are the rims but just my opinion. The owner think his car is hella awesome. Good for him.

I honestly wonder if some of the cars I've seen with matte paint jobs are supposed to be "reverse sleepers." I mean, so many people KNOW there are a few cars out there designed to be sleepers... it makes me wonder if people purposely modify their brand new shiny ride into looking like a "sleeper" just to get attention. Trust me, when you see these cars, it's like... it looks perfectly fine, except for the nasty, yet purposely, "DIY" MATTE re-paint.
I was about to ask who the hell does this to a BMW 328i... but then I remember where I see it, bunch of rich brats.
I'd happily admit being jealous of the brat with a brand new Nissan GTR... if it hadn't been re-painted similarly.

I won't say it's the same case for another car... a Lamborghini Gallardo (I think it was a Gallardo)... with, not quite matching matte paint all over (some panels seem darker than others, etc). I wonder if this was a "salvaged" Lambo... or possibly even a kit?
