For all the times I have driven on the 5 and 99, I have never thought adding more lanes would make this trip faster. If everyone drove smoothly and adhered to "slower traffic keep right," I think that long slog up and down central California would actually be enjoyable. But, regardless of how many lanes exist, there is always that one driver who decides s/he has to zoom down the right side and jam on the brakes to avoid feeding a semi-truck an enema. Then they cut to the left, causing those drivers to brake.

 

It is a good way to reduce green space, pollute making the road & encourage more folks to drive places. All in all, this is just going to pollute a ton more. More roads/cars is never the answer.
