Short Shifter for 1995 EG Gli Civic

Hi all,
I have been looking into buying a short shifter for my honda manual
civic. Firstly do they make a differnce in the changes as many claim
that they can reduce the shift length by 40% and secondly can anyone
recomend a brand that fits and works well as I have seen quite a few on
ebay for some very cheap prices.
Regards,
Michael

Re: Short Shifter for 1995 EG Gli Civic

only 2 reasons to use a short shifter............
cosmetic and cheap fix when the stock o-rings fail.

With the shorter shaft, you'll have to learn to slow your shifts as compared
to the stock shifter. The tranny can only shift so fast, no matter how fast
you try!!!!!!

Damage to the shifter forks and synchros will result.

That being said, the Edelbrock shifter ($60 US) is the better shifter since
it uses bronze bushing/bearings instead of the rubber o-rings. The heat from
the cat. convertor causes the stock o-rings to fail, esp. after the
heatshield falls off.

Beware of the cheap ones on Ebay. Most have been known to break off at
midpoint, no fun driving a car that way!!!!!!!!!

Can't you replace the o-rings and rubber bushings?

My 98 civic's shifter is getting a little too
loose for my liking, I was thinking of trying to
source some brass bushings for the shift
linkage. Do parts like this exist?

Re: Short Shifter for 1995 EG Gli Civic

I've bought two off of ebay. Both had a variable "throw" and used
bearings at the lower joint. Watch out for the metal shield bearings.
They do let water pass through and the bearing seizes. I replaced mine
with 2rs bearings and popped the rubber shields off and stuffed the
bearing with waterproof grease.

Also consider the energy suspension shift kit. Firms up the shift
mechanism immensely. Since you'll have it all apart anyway, you might as
well go for it!

When I installed the short shifter i my wagon, I also had to cut off the
"weight" on the end since it hit the exhaust.
