The 2008 Honda Prius

Say hello to the 2008 Honda Prius!

Err...I mean FCX Clarity.

The FCX Clarity is ready for the road. A limited number of
these groundbreaking vehicles will be leased to Southern
Californians
starting during the summer of 2008.

The reason for this limited initial release is that in order to drive a fuel cell vehicle, you have to be able to refuel it. And since these clean cars do not run on gasoline, you can’t just stop off at your regular corner gas station to fill up. Hydrogen fuel stations are critical to the deployment of a fuel cell car and, as it stands now, stations accessible to the public are still quite limited.

Therefore, only customers currently residing in the Torrance, Santa Monica and Irvine areas who meet additional qualification criteria will be eligible to take an FCX Clarity home. Honda wants to ensure that FCX Clarity drivers will be able to take their vehicles in for service at participating dealers and have convenient access to refueling stations. Leasing will be handled through American Honda Motor Co., Inc. in conjunction with local dealers. Maintenance will also be covered by the three-year $600/month lease.

It looks like a weird fat whale to me. The inside is sick though.

Do car designers try to make the cars as ugly as possible? It seems that the cars that have been coming out for the past few years have been getting uglier and uglier (with a FEW exceptions). That car could get 1,000 miles to the Gallon, Never need maintenance and I would still not buy the thing.

i'm really glad they're actually getting this technology tested in real-world conditions, hopefully they're actually able to market this.

personally i think they should bring back the insight and make that a fuel cell. i love that car.

Not really a fair comparison since the Prius is a hybrid while the FCX is a hydrogen fuel cel vehicle (hence the FC). I think the car looks cool though, sort of like a bigger Civic with a cool futuristic looking interior.

Good luck in getting one though. You have to be approved by Honda to get one. In other words you have to live in an area with somekind of hydrogen fueling infrastructure (Los Angeles). The car is designed to try and put hydrogen power on the map and maybe get them widened and improved. The car also is only available as a lease vehicle at $600/mo for 3 years. Once the lease is up, thats it, return the car, you cant buy it.

The comparison to the Prius was not for it's fuel type, but for the similar lines that the two share. I guarantee that it will be mistaken for the Prius on the street.

You know what, you are right. My brain must have flatlined. After you said that I realized that the overall shape was prius like, just bigger. I thought you meant from the engine standpoint. To me it looked kind of like a large mutated 4 door CRX.

stupid brain...time for me to get stronger coffee..... :D

This car supposedly costs an insane amount to produce - rumor is a million bucks each. That's why they aren't selling them. This is an experiment on the part of Honda to show off their technology. This is going to be a hollywood celeb ride.

Hopefully one doesn't blow up and kill George Clooney or that chick from splash... haha

If you haven't already you should look into Hydrogen production which is what this whole technology is riding on.

The production vehicle always ends up being way uglier than the concept:(
