I noticed a couple of things about having the "diamond access okay"
stickers on my Honda Civic Hybrid.

As someone pointed out, Hybrids, especially the Prius, get better mileage
poking along in the heavy traffic than they might in the car pool lane.

I find that I drive faster in the carpool lane than I did alone on a
freeway. My mileage is down from 52.3 to 49.9 on the same trip.

I also find that I leave work earlier, to take advantage of the carpool
lane, instead of staying later until there is less traffic.

So, I'm using more gas, and I'm on the road when the traffic is heavy.
That doesn't sound like a win-win for the environment.

Maybe the stickers should only be issued to new buyers of hybrids ;-)

shouldnt make a difference, really. ive never seen a clogged carpool
lane unless theres an accident- then ALL lanes slow down.

I personally do feel that I am doing a good thing for the environment.

Being able to drive in the carpool lane has nothing to do with that, and
actually, I have regressed just a little from my tree-hugging ability of a
month ago.

I'm not an environut by my standards, the Civic Hybrid, the Escape Hybrid,
and the home solar panels notwithstanding ;-)

I do, however get to scream "I'm a greenie" with my new stickers, on what
was otherwise a pretty unrecognizable hybrid. I don't care about that part.

It is a stray thought. Before, I just drove my car. I didn't evangelize,
I didn't stand out in a crowd of cars, I just drove.

I just saw one of those on Highway 87 in San Jose this morning.
I was in the carpool lane, he was in the regular lanes (?).
He was also in a 100mph crouch, at about 50mph. I don't know if he was
catching a lot of wind buffetting if he sat up straight, or if he was
trying to improve the aerodynamics and get a couple more mpg.

My Civic gets better mileage than my BMW K-75 motorcycle.
What does a Burgmann get? What about 2-up riding?

You earn "credits" during city driving, for being a frugal user of
gasoline.

You are allowed to "spend" those "credits" by taking advantage of the
diamond lane.

My '01 F-650GSA got 71mpg stock, 63 when I put on a taller windsheild. My
'02 K1200RSA on the otherhand is a pig, barely squeeking out 40mpg (boring
slab runs) and 34 when I'm feeling "spirited".

"K" bikes were never known for their economy. Part of why they're called
the "Flying Brick".

id strongly disagree. its nice that honda and toyota are getting some
rewards for all their R&D work, and if it cuts down on gas use, all the
better.

let GM die their slow death selling 20 different versions of rebadged
truck chassis.

would you rather have people buying tahoes?

wouldnt bother me. i think smog checks are a scam, anyway. normal
attrition gets all the beaters off the road, and improved smog devices
keep the air cleaner, longer.

no idea. if he was wearing a half-shell, he was likely ducking behind
the windshield. they top out at 95mph, and even at that speed wind
buffeting isnt really "bad".

2-up is nice for around town, but on a 400lb bike with a 200lb rider,
adding more weight makes accelleration a bit... less brisk. one up, its
a hoot. im usually doing 85ish in the carpool lane, and it still gets
50mpg!

Personally, I think HOV lanes should be abolished. They do more harm
than good. Taking away 25% to 20% of available capacity to cater to 3%
of the drivers it complete idiocy. The same goes to traffic patterns
and freeway meters that allow a steady flow of traffic onto the freeway
rather than a natural one.

Forgive the outburst, but I have sensed something wrong since they
started and it was confirmed by an article I read in discover magazine.
Granted, it would please me a great deal to have the perk afforded an
ULEV in California, but I don't live there anymore and my new home
doesn't have such perks. Perhaps someday, but even if I could get away
with it, as a whole, there's nothing to be gained with HOV lanes.
There has never been a report that indicated a significant, positive
impact of the stiling of traffic in such a manner.

As I recall, the HOV lanes in California came about where the Sierra Club
was managing to block _any_ expansion of the freeway, and an expansion that
cajoled some people into carpooling was accepted as a compromise.

Pat Bedard of Car and Driver once did a column where he explained this,
and concluded that you could buy a brand-new Cadillac to replace every
junker in the country, and you'd spend less money overall than trying to
eke another hundredth of a percent fewer pollutants out of a current car

Minor nit - federal emission standards first appeared for the 1968 cars
(and a lot of those early solutions were *terrible*, e.g., air pumps &
the like) in the US.
