Confusing F430-based Custom Ferrari

Spy shots: Ferrari F430 successor

The F142

The automotive web lit up this weekend with speculation over a mysterious Ferrari photographed running development laps around the Fiorano test track.. While some suggest this could be the successor to either the F430 or the Enzo, observers were confused by the complete lack of any apparent effort to disguise the car's bodywork. The latest reports now indicate that the vehicle in question is a one-off rebodied F430 custom made by Italian design house Fioravanti for what must be an incredibly wealthy customer.

The emergence of the purported Fioravanti F430 follows similar creations from Pininfarina, Giugiaro and Zagato (and reportedly soon from Touring) as well as the announcement of Ferrari's program to offer discerning (and financially unlimited) clients with custom models. The criteria call for leaving certain elements – including the crash structures and the running gear – intact, but apart from that it's open season. The Fioravanti take on the F430 includes a mildly re-sculpted front end, a heavily-modified rear section and an extensive remolding of many body panels in lightweight (and costly) carbon fiber. The vehicle looks about ready for delivery, so we hope we might get a chance for an up-close view at the upcoming Paris show in October.

F430 Successor (F142) F470? will continue with the high revving Naturally Aspirated engine

- 4.7L / 4-Valves / Direct-Injection (DI)
- Power: 510hp ~ 560hp
- Upgraded Suspensions
- Electronics similar to the 430 Scuderia
- New buttons/features for the transmission (F1/DCT?) nobody knows
- Quad tail lights will be replaced by Dual (599 / California) same goes for the headlights.
- Weight: Similar to the F430. 1,300 kg(2,860 lbs) or possibly lighter than the current 430 Scuderia which weighs 1,250 kg(2,750 lbs).

PS from an Italian magazine

Launch Date: 9 / 2009 or early 2010

Enzo Successor (F70 / FX70?) : V8 Twin-Turbo (7,000RPM+) or V12 N/a

These are only rumours, nothing official from Ferrari S.p.A. / Luca di Montezemolo.

Ferrari will unveil its F430 replacement at Frankfurt in October, giving its biggest-selling model a life of just five years.

Code-named Ferrari F142 and expected to be christened Ferrari F450 in production, the new V8-powered car will be largely new, with few carryover components in the chassis or bodywork.

While it was only released in 2004, the Ferrari F430’s chassis was heavily based on the 360 Modena whose parts dated back to 1999.

The new Ferrari F450 will also be the first production Ferrari to reflect the ethos of green materials and weight reduction first seen on the Ferrari Mille Chili eco-concept (pictured) in 2007.

Production of F430s has slowed recently, ahead of the F450’s start-of-production in July. Insiders who have seen the F450 insist it is one of the most beautiful Ferraris in years.

While details on the car are scant, it will run an enlarged version of the F430’s V8, equipped with direct injection giving an output of more than 500bhp from its 4.5-litre capacity, hence the F450 moniker.

The transmission will be a variant of the seven-speed dual-clutch system shared with the new California.

Linked to Ferrari’s steering-wheel mounted ‘manettino’ control, the dual-clutch transmission promises drivers a choice between quick sporty changes and relaxed automatic operation.

Ferrari has been working hard on weight reduction with its suppliers and the F450 is expected to take Alcoa’s advances in aluminium chassis technology to new heights.

Sources also suggest the F450 is already as fast around the Fiorano test track as the compromise-free F430 Scuderia.

But it will also ride more firmly than the Ferrari California, leaving buyers in no doubt about the focus of either car.

European Ferrari F450 sales are expected to begin late this year or early in 2010.

Here are some new spy shots of the F142 mule.

F142 is the code name for the model meant to replace the current F430. And while this F142 comes dressed in the F430's body, we're beginning to see some of the modifications to the model that will likely be seen in its successor.

Of note in these new shots, taken during winter testing in northern Scandinavia, are the larger wheel cases both at the rear and at the front. (The last set of spy shots showed only a larger front wheel case.) The car also has some kind of bulge on the front bonnet for reasons we can only guess at.

Seen before were the larger air intakes just before the rear wheel and on the shoulders of the body. They seem a little exaggerated and may have been shaped that way simply to throw us off. Or maybe those bulging air intakes are needed to provide a more powerful engine with lots of fresh air.

Speculation has it that the F430 will be replaced by a model named the F450 and will come with a 4.5 liter V8 pumping out over 500 hp. The F430 gets 483 hp out of a 4.3 liter power plant. How will Ferrari get that many horses out of a 4.5 liter engine? Perhaps by increasing the rev limit to 10,000 rpm and improving air flow and cooling which may account for those larger intakes.

The F450 will likely take its first public bow at the Frankfurt motor show which takes place later this year in September.

Further spy images of the forthcoming Ferrari F450 have emerged. The test mule was shot while testing in Sweden in conditions which are not ideal for a rear-wheel-driven Ferrari. Nevertheless, ice-cold circumstances are part of the development process if reliability under any kind of weather is to be claimed.

Boasting over 500hp the F450 is even rumoured to have a higher power output than the 520hp F430 Scuderia. Ferrari will use the same double-clutch gearbox from the California for the F450 to double-up with the envisaged 4.5-litre V8. How the global financial difficulty has affected the scarlet marque will be seen in the F450 through possible technologies like a road car version of KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery Systems).

The mule in these pictures may be disguised as an F430 but the differences are easy to spot; wider fenders, the air scoops and that centrally-mounted exhaust pipe give the guessing game away.

Ferrari has apparently codenamed the car F142 and it is expected to make its first public showing at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2009. Deliveries would then commence just over a year from now.

Ferrari F450 spied with no camo!

The first spy-photos of the real prototype of the forthcoming Ferrari F450 have emerged – and the car photographed doesn’t wear an inch of disguise! While some of the body pieces are missing on this prototype, a large portion of the production sheet metal is clearly visible!
