You CAN enjoy the best of both worlds, you know. You know you wouldn't be using the most expensive cars to run to Home Depot or Lowes for gardening, landscaping, or lumber. Maybe that SUV one, but others, well, no, you don't do that, it's just not done!

Lots of people rent vacation homes. Go away to islands, or off for adventures. Take cruises. It's a treat. Some do little vacations often. Some do a "once in a lifetime" big splurge.

If YOUR joy is automobiles, rent one of those exotic or luxury cars. You can do that. Some not quite as fancy are as close as Avis, like the Corvette, the Solstice, the convertible Z.
Avis Cool Cars

Three days, two nights, a convertible, your sweetheart, a bed and breakfast inn. Along the coast, into the country, enjoying the summer or bundled in a sweater and seeing the glorious autumnal colors (yes, you can run the A/C or Heater with the top down. I did, in my convertible and with T-tops)

If you'll be around L.A. or Las Vegas, Beverly Hills rent a car has all kinds. Exotics. Classics.
Luxury car rental, Exotic and Luxury Car Rental, Exotic car rental - Los Angeles, Phoenix & S. CA - Las Vegas - New York

This Exotic car rentals in Florida has two locations, Miami and Fort Lauderdale:

More options:
Exotic Car Rentals, Rent Maybach, Lamborghini Rentals, Rolls Royce Rentals, Range Rover Rentals

Here's a whole site devoted the different companies that rent various luxury cars:
Exotic Car Rental Directory - Exotic and Luxury Car Rentals Worldwide

Some of which I'd already linked to, but there are others. Some of the rentals sound affordable. Others are shocking...

$11,400
$13,680
per week

Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Rental: Rent a Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren in New York (NY / NYC, Long Island & The Hamptons, NJ, CT and PA)

I have enough trouble not hitting myself in the face with my Fit hatch. It would kind of cease being a cool car after the second flesh wound or the first trip to the hospital:

"What happened to your face?"
"It's the dang car, I keep getting bashed by the door."

someone who makes 150k per year may struggle to own a honda fit.

after paying uncle sam, the mortgage, student loans, and maxing out retirement contributions, there's just about enough left to save up for that vacation you'll need from your 60+ hr work week. speak nothing of the 20k engagement ring, 30k wedding, 100k+ per child college fund, or aging parents.

what sounds like a lot in your 20's will barely get you through your 30's. some days i think about trading in my fit for a clunker.

Ahhh, then you reassess your life and lifestyle.

The New York Times > Log In

You don't buy the 20K ring or the 30K wedding. I think I'd like a pot-luck wedding. LOL! Pot-luck reception anyway. And a regular city hall service. Because I'm cheap...er...thrifty.

There are plenty of lovely rings that are far FAR less. Nice estate pieces. Non-conflict diamonds. A nice sparkly band is fine.

Shop around, at least:
Ross-Simons - Fine Jewelry, Diamond Jewelry, Gold Jewelry, Gemstone Jewelry, Gold Jewelry, Diamond Jewelry

Here's what ya do. This is for everyone. Go to :
Choose A Benefit Calculator

Or review the statement you get from Social Security at the beginning of each year. That statement tells you how much you would receive if you became disabled. We'll assume that you aren't of retirement age yet. And remember there is at least a 5 month period where you won't get a dime.

Look at that amount. You'll need at least six times that amount to cover your expenses while waiting for disability to be filed and approved.

Next, that's it. That's what you'd get. If the amount you'd get is less than what you are currently spending, you'd have to bail on a lot of things.

You can squirrel away a winter's supply while minimizing your expenditures and downgrading your lifestyle to one that makes sense.

Or you can glutton out and find yourself in real big trouble if ANYTHING goes wrong. The big mortgage bust is the clearest example of things that can go wrong.

Not only that, but you don't have to bust your butt trying so hard if you are spending considerably less. You would not have to work 60 hours a week. I realize some folks LIVE to work. Their career is EVERYTHING.

But they aren't any more superhuman or immune to the effects of illness, accident, or injury than the rest of us. Most folks are a couple paychecks away from the downward spiral of near homelessness.

Exactly!!! Most people live beyond their means, whether they make 30k a year or 200k a year.

Here's where it matters:

What have you done for your body lately?

Me? I'm apparently waiting for a very slow two-legged turtle to hobble by carrying a bag of take-out on it's shell.
