New Volkswagen Golf R 270hp
#9
you know you guys, the last time i checked, the subie sti and mistu lancer evo didnt exactly cost 24k. they are both cars that knock on the 40k door. whats more, they are made in larger numbers than the R golf, which is going to be limited run, as it always has been. that alone drives up price.
if honda could get away with it with the barely better than a regular si mugen edition, there is no reason to say this is over priced. the mugen was 30k.
what kind of performance was everyone here expecting? the 5.5 0-60 time is on par if not FASTER than the evo mr with the dual clutch transmission. and that car stickers for way more and has a playskook interior compared to this thing. (granted i love the recaros, but aside from that, the rest of the interior is plain jane lancer, which is nothing to write home about. even regular golfs, espeically the new one on which this one is based, have an exemplary interior. to begin with. )
and in all honesty, this thing has only quaoted estimated 0-60 times, and need i remind you that all of us fit drivers should be experts on why straight line 'performance' is not all that matters? i thought we were all familiar with the concept. we dont know grip, skidpad, braking distances or anything yet, so its to early to say. and vw has NEVER even positioned it against said competitors, but it does just good enough to merit the comparisons. this one finally ups the ante to were it can probably hold its own.
and for that i applaud vw, because i guarantee you this car will be so much easier to live with on a day to day basis than the sti or evo. (evo especially) and that interior? please, neither the subie or evo can even hold a candle to it.
this car is automtoive sex in every way.

another thing that is worth mentioning , VW is notorious for quoting low 0-60 times. they said the gen 5 r32 would do the deed in 6.5 seconds. edmunds got it to do 6.0 flat. car and driver got it to do 5.4!
so if the estimated time is already at 5.5 well....i let you figure out the rest. :)

On another note, Tool u sold ur fit? let's see some pix of the new ride!

it will probably be prices similarly above the new golf, the same way the r32 was above the rabbit. simple as that.
so is no one going to own up to the 'not worth the performance' claims? as compared to what i'd like to know?

they do. they may not be honda bulletproof, but then again, hondas are not exatly bulletproof anymore. i had just as many issues with my 07 rabbit as i do with my 07 fit.
check out their recent consumer reports ratings and owner experiences. they may not be perfect by any means, but they have come WORLDS since the notorious mkIV models.

the rabbit or the gti?big difference in price.you can get a rabbit for $16600 and the R32 option 1 was around $30K thats nowhere near similar.

i said that the difference between the r level golf and base golfs would be about the same with relation to price. thought it was pretty clear? i didn't say the trim levels themselves were CLOSE in price. if the new golf is around 17k-18k, then an r golf being upwards of 32-35 k is more or less the same amount of increase in price.
having said that, on an unrelated to what i said earlier note, it was very easy to option out a gti to r32 levels.
