Bomb-proof shomb-proof

What do you guys think, will this void my warranty? LOL I have been meaning to put up some pics of the grenaded 350 that is in my wifes "mud truck" And so here they are, in all their grotesque glory, those of you with weak stomachs may want to turn away now....

what i want to know is why you painted a chevy block blue before you painted it the proper orange? painting a chevy engine blue is like calling jesus christ a homosexual. it doesnt fly in some parts.

I wouldn't have expected you to know the history Kelso, but it wasn't me that painted the block, Thank God! My first thought when i saw it was WTF!? Maybe all they had handy was Chrysler blue when it came time to spray-bomb restore the motor. It is a four bolt 350 out of a late seventies sedan, probably a Caprice, judging by the casting numbers on the block and heads. It was Billy-Bob swapped by the trucks previous owner to replace a 305. My plans are to replace it with a Blueprint 383 Stroker with Vortec cast iron heads. I have the cam ordered already, Comp Cams Extreme Energy 280/268 which with the heads, headers, and a 750 carb should net me right around 400 WHP/400tq. Now that my garage has been cleared of its previous tenant (40 Cadillac) The new motor is getting ordered Friday, and will be installed the following week, by yours truly. Four wheel burn-out pics to follow! The remains of this engine are going into the shop where I will dismantle it and get an idea of how viable the block is for rebuilding. If the water jackets and cylinders are still OK, I will probably bore it out .030 and rebuild it with all forged guts for a S/C, or a healthy dose of NOS. To be installed in a later vehicle, or maybe the truck, one just never knows....

Your awesome! Impressive that you are able to do all this work and get it back where it needs to be or better. We want to see pictures after you get it all completed.

Thanks Cat! I have had one hell of a summer so far. I spent all of June and half of May reassembling the Cadillac to get it delivered to its new owner. Now here we are in the second week of July and i'm getting ready to do an engine swap on the truck! I have old oil embedded in both my elbows and the back of my head from all the time I've spent laying on my back underneath things. I may not turn a wrench for a year after this is all over with LOL

I removed and autopsied the oil pump today, it was not the cause of the blow-up as i had suspected. Looks like the #2 piston rod end-cap bolts failed first, the pieces from that bouncing around in the pan took out #3. With the oil pump out of the way I can look straight at the #3 rod which is bent up against the bottom of the block at a 90 degree angle! I guess that one is coming out the bottom of the engine instead of the top LOL. Gotta get a harmonic balancer puller from VatoZone so I can take the crank out the bottom this week. I'm hoping to have nothing but the bare block to pull when the time comes to make the job as easy as it can be, but we'll see.....

Forced induction FTW! The ease with which you can extract power from the SBC takes my breath away. Damn near every piece of the thing can be replaced/improved upon to add power. Hell even a single point increase in compression ratio is good for something! Which is why I decided to go for the 383 to start with, it wasn't but 300 bucks more than a mildly built 350, and offers more torque right out of the gate. I'll just be happy to have the damn truck driving around again at this point.....

Had a very productive couple of days, yesterday got some buddies to bring a roll back out and turn the truck around and nose it into the garage for me. Last night I took the radiator support off. And this afternoon I pulled the old engine out! The back half of the cam fell out of the block when I turned the engine up on its tail to set it down LOL The cam was broken into three or four pieces when the engine let go. Right now I have the mother of all cleaning jobs to do. More pics....

Still banging away at it three days later. The bits and pieces from the old motor are getting cleaned up and installed on the new one (motor mounts, alternator brackets, power steering pump etc.) I have run into a road-block with the new flexplate. I ordered an external balance 400 FP for the 383 thinking it would be just the ticket. Well it ain't! damn thing is too big, the centerbore that goes over the crank is 3/4 of an inch too large! I'm sort of at a loss, as Jegs told me that would be the right thing to use. Im gonna call them in the AM and sic them on it. In the meantime, I ceramic-coated the new headers silver (shweet!) and installed the balancer, water pump, and motor mount shells. Now all I need is the right flexplate and we can get her into the truck! Will post pics tomorrow.....

Who doesn't love a good chicken picture? LMAO sorry the camera batteries are taking a powder so this is all I could post LOL I did get the right flexplate ordered at least, it'll be here in the AM, and LMC delivered the hoses I need to get the power steering hooked back up as well....

And here are some more pics! Got the flexplate at 1:30, by 3:00 had the motor back in the truck. Try doing that one by yourself sometime, I used up every one of my bad words trust me. Also took some pics of the carnage from the old motor which I disassembled while waiting for Fedex, hence the name of this thread. Shes looking like a runner again finally, too bad about the record setting heat this week LOL

Well I didn't make my one week deadline (boo-hiss!) Too many little things got in the way. The power steering pump is shot, I discovered after re-mounting it on the engine. The headers are shorter than the old ones so the exhaust system has to be rebuilt from the headers back. Annnnd I sorta kinda lost the starter mounting bolts so I had to go find new ones at the last second. On the upside the motor is back in and plumbed, wired and ready to run. I just need to finish the exhaust and replace the steering pump which will happen by midweek at the latest. Then I can rehang the radiator support, radiator, and headlights and fire this beast up! More pics as she sits tomorrow.

Just slap some turndowns on the end of the headers and take it for a spin around the block.
