What is he using for an auto transaxle? It's always been my opinion that finding a usable front drive auto is what has held these cars back. GM guys have the 4t65/80's that can hold up fairly well, but the options for mitsu's wasn't so great.

Uh.. the DSM autos are damn near bullet proof with a few relatively cheap upgrades..
Blue wire mod to lock in full line pressure. Maybe an end clutch pack and some friction steels from IPT if you are makng more than 450whp.
I don't mean to be rude but what you are saying doesn't really line up with reality. A lot of the big dogs in the DSM world switch to auto when they get sick of blowing up built transmissions.
Ted's car for instance:

Jeff English's auto running 8's:

There's several more as well.
It's so prevalent its kind of a big deal when guys like John Wigger and Mike Wohler stick with 5spds. Both are making more than 1000whp and trapping in the high 150's- mid 160mph. Of course there's the option to go with one of Shep's dogbox transmissions but those are $6500+ and those still break.
If I didn't abhor autos it would make complete sense from a financial perspective to go auto when I go out on kill mode next year.
Now just for fun:

Thanks for the correction. I was unaware that these auto's were capable. Back when I was around these cars and racing more (1996 -2000), the auto's were self destructing at the track. Looks like years of working with them has taught people what they need to survive.
