2007 Civic overheating. Looking for help..

hey, I am really not well versed in auto repair. All I really do is my oil change and air filter. stuff like that. So just looking for help here...

We have a 2007 Civic. The car is overheating. Checked the coolant, and it's right up to the brim. Also, within min and max in the coolant reservoir. What's the next stop in solving this problem?

Check Radiator Cap?

Most shops should have a pressure tester, maybe just ask if they could test it real quick? Should take literally 10 seconds.

Car's pretty new to be anything serious.

Thank you! She is very new. But we've done a bit of driving. It's at 142,000 miles.

Wow about 30k a year? At that mileage i'd just replace the cap anyway, it's not expensive.

Have you ever changed out the coolant? I don't think that would be the direct cause of your overheating but it's probably a good idea to if you haven't yet, old coolant definitley won't help your situation.

Same symptoms for my blown head gasket. Wasn't bad enough for liquid to pass but air was getting into the coolant system. Same mileage as you too. You can try the thermostat, but my money is on a bad HG. ive own 5678 gen civics now i own a fit :) but thinking of gettign the new si not sure tho but still try the thermostat just my 2cents Sry :)

It's my old man's car. 99% sure the coolant was replaced, but it's possible it wasn't. :/

Ah ok, I misunderstood earlier, you're saying the radiator cap could be the leak? I should just replace it, yea. There aren't signs of leaking around the cap, but who knows.

The other poking around I hve done online leads me to believe that the coolant isn't circulating. Even at very high temperature the radiator fans don't kick in. Only way I can turn them on is by turning on the A/C.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...1/101_0463.jpg Maybe your Cooling fan switch is broken, i think this happens due to the coolant getting too hot, it burns out the mechanism that makes this switch work. Its on the thermostat housing.or replace this bro might be that try

Oh see that information is important lol

Yeah check fan switch.

Just to add about the rad cap, it doesn't have to leak to be bad, the spring could start to fail and it won't hold pressure right, but if your fans aren't turning on that's obviously not your biggest concern.

Does it only overheat when you're sitting still at a light/drivethrough/parking lot and get better when you're driving? If it's hot all the time you've got bigger problems.

It seems to be it's worst when we're driving. While I was corresponding with you fine people my old man dropped it off at the dealer. LOL. I sort of wanted to do this myself, but I know he just wants it done. I'll repost here what I find out.

One thing worth noting though, i couldget the radiatior fans on if I turned on the A/C. Even with them on it would still overheat though. :/

The thermostat could be stuck closed.

at 140+K a headgasket wouldnt surprise me. ive helped do one before but it wouldnt be very fun or practical unless you had a shop and a whole smorgasboard of tools. on the other hand doing it at the dealer is going to be pricy.

THIS! If your temp don't get better while you're driving casually (below 3000rpm), then it's the thermostat. Especially when it gets worse when you're driving, and even the fan don't help... The thermostat fails to circulate coolant from the engine. check it and replace it if it's already bad. They're not expensive.

Second guess (but unlikely) you're radiator or coolant lines are clogged.. Highly unlikely except if you have ever put something in your radiator other than coolant.

So, two shops confirmed it… the block is cracked. :(! As close as I can figure I put coolant in too soon and the difference in temperature cracked it. IDK what I am gonna do with it from here.

That was my 1st thought. Nothing that you did caused it, it's a known and documented factory defect. The 2006-2008 R18 Honda engines are known to have block cracking problems, ususally under the intake manifold.

I belive that Honda has extended the warranty to 8 years for this problem. Get in contact with Honda about a warranty repair.

Aw that's a bummer, sorry to hear that.

I wonder why the fans weren't turning on at all though?

Thermostat went bad ---> overheat ---> cracked block?
