Toyota says Corolla was the best-selling nameplate last year

1.16 million Corollas sold according to Toyota

Toyota is claiming the world's best-selling passenger vehicle in 2012 was the Corolla.
It was only yesterday when Ford announced the Focus was the most successful car in the world last year. Citing Polk global marketing registration data, Ford says they sold 1,024,410 units of the Focus in 2012. The same source indicates Toyota shifted 872,774 Corollas last year, but the Japanese company has different numbers.
In an official statement released just a few hours after Ford published their numbers, Toyota says they were able to sell 1.16 million Corollas in 2012. According to Toyota's U.S. vice-president of communications, "Toyota sold 1.16 million Corolla nameplate vehicles globally in 2012", while Ford's U.S. sales analyst Erich Merkle declared the Focus was the "best-selling nameplate" as the 1.02 million figure represents "a pure number that is verified by a third party."

I believe the major cause of the discrepancy is this. Toyota includes cars that are based on the Corolla and (may, not sure) include the name Corolla in the title. For example, the Toyota Auris. Is it the Toyota Corolla Auris or just the Auris? I don't know. But this is the type of thing they are doing.

It makes some sense. The Auris is, I believe, either the same or very similar to the US Matrix. They're the same car mechanically, same engines etc. May have the same nameplate in some markets. So .. you can sort of see.

But of course if they called it the Toyota Corolla Hatchback then the americans who think the Matrix is an "SUV" (you laugh, I don't joke) wouldn't buy it. They're pretty separate cars. Not like the Focus sedan and hatch. Also, if you buy the Focus sedan over the hatch, you're officially a moron.

I can understand why Corollas' sell like they do I still see early 1990s ones around here that look like they are in great condition. The shop I take my Miata to for service has a few older Corolla that they service with 300k I think for the same time period you would see fewer Ford Escorts still on the road.

. Yeah. And the ones you do see look terrible. The Corollas look like they came out of the factory yesterday, aside from the aged styling. And heck, they DO come out of the factory with aged styling, so .. there ya go :)
