I agree with fitchet and sneefy. It's due to both distracted drivers and distracted pedestrians.

Traffic laws haven't changed much. Sidewalks haven't changed much. What has changed is the general amount of attention the average person is paying to their surroundings. This is true whether they are the one in the car or the one outside of the car.
SUV deaths are up, fatalities are down in regular cars, not SUV.

The drivers are the ones doing the killing, not the pedestrians.

This is a very important point. SUVs are much more likely to kill a pedestrian than a Fit, Fusion, etc., just think about where you're being hit & what's happening to the pedestrian in the immediate aftermath.

I've watched the Kavanaugh hearings, we're already lower than low.

So, pedestrians have NO responsibility in the outcome? Are you going to go take a walk on the Interstate?

If you do, and cause an accident, I'd say YOU are at fault.

Also, maybe it's a personality type difference, but I would rather be run over by a car than be the one running over the pedestrian. I have sympathy for the driver. It's easier to die than to live after something like that. Pedestrians need to watch where they are walking so they don't ruin someone's life.

You have obviously never seen the classic movie Death Race 2000 or the 2008 remake Death Race.

Of course you are right. As a motorist it's always MY responsibility to be on the look out for pedestrians, and drive as safely as possible.

But I do believe in a shared RESPONSIBILITY for ones own safety and the safety of others, whether you are behind the wheel OR walking down the street.
And IMO, things have changed. People seem more cocooned in the public and far less aware of their own surroundings.

Point being? I'm not blaming poor headlights for the majority of problems here.

The way you phrase this, as well as your previous comments, seems to indicate it's all about your irrational negative feelings about cars. Rational and objective discussion would thus be pointless.

Hopefully I'm wrong.

that is a unique way of looking at things. i likes.

if a ped jumped out into the street unexpectedly most likely police will not put the fault on the driver. but the driver must live with the fact they hit someone.. and the damage to da car from a fartard jumping out into the street.

Banning cars is the solution...

Do it for the children. If it only saves one life, then it's worth it.

I second the notion that the new blind spot created by the giant a pillars can be partially to blame. If it wasn't that I'm a cautious slow driver through car parks, i wouldn't be able to count the number of times i'd've slammed a pedestrian as they simply appear into view on my windshield.
