Dunno about packing, the seller had boxes left over from the rims/tires she got so she just used those. I later used the same boxes to haul my old steelies to Allentown PA in the back of my minivan to sell to another fitfreaker.

Shipping charges from Chicago (zip: 60706) to my location in MN, is around $60 (I just checked in ups.com).

So $200 is a bit stiff.

I think all you have to do is to paste thick flat cardboards on either side that would cover the wheel and keep it sealed. Just make sure that the cardboard on either side, is securely held in place. You can leave the tire portion un-covered.

That was how tirerack.com shipped the tires/wheels for my Subaru WRX to me (FedEx).

did you do ups with the total weight of the what the wheels and tires are going to be then take into consideration he is going to have to pay for packing material. The stock wheels alone weigh 17lb a piece if I remember correctly so there is no way it should be only $60 to ship.

The calculations I used were as follows (essentially pertained to the 17x7 stock wheels on my WRX, fitted with 215/45R17 tires) to be shipped from a generic Chicago Zipcode of 60706 to my MN location:

Weight per package : 40lbs
Total packages : 4
Dimensions per package : 25" x 25" x 9".
Total cost for 4 packages (UPS Ground) : $62.04
Total Cost for 4 packages (UPS next day Air AM) : $811.68.


The shipment costs from a different seller in VA (did not materialize finally) was around $122 for the whole thing, but VA is a lot farther away.

Hmmmmm...I'll see...if I can't sell them I may just keep them. I mean they are mint wheels with like new tires and I guess it wont hurt to have some spares.

That is true. Keeping them as spares is a great idea too.

I just wish you would go with the 'greater idea' of just shipping them to me.

As mentioned, the effort involved is not that big in pasting cardboards on either side of each wheel, with some tape, and dropping them off at your local UPS, and you get to clear out your garage space.

Warning.
The wheels I had shipped to me (new take offs with tires) had the clear coat scuffed badly.
A wheel shop was able to buff most of the scratches out.
You need to keep the card board away from the front of the wheel.
I would use old cotton towels, micro mibre cloths ect.

I think even a layer of smooth plastic sheet should suffice, beneath the cardboard, right ?

No.
It would grind the dust into the wheel just like paper would.
You need something soft in there.

Now I am confused. Which dust are we talking about, that will "grind into the wheel" ?

I am assuming that the dirt and grime on the wheel (through driving), would not be present on it, at the time of shipping.

Any dust in the air that gets onto the wheel.
Throw and old shirt or towel over the surface of the wheel wheel to keep it way from the cardboard and your set.
