I don't see how the manufacturer of the burning software used makes a difference?

The general idea will be similar (rip DVD, modify/save image files, burn new disk), however the folder names, file names, and locations on the disk will likely vary greatly not only between manufacturers, but even different software revisions within the same manufacturer.

Does anyone know, how to actually DISABLE features in Honda/Alpine Navigation units? I got my on eBay, it's "demo unit", and it has every feature enabled - CD changer, XM radio, rear view camera and even feedback from climate control. And because it expects all these components, it does not pass In-Line diagnostic. I managed to get out of diagnostics, and unit works fine. However I would like to disable (for now) features I don't use. Anyone got that deep into the unit?

Did you try hitting Menu + Map + Cancel at the same time and poking around the Navi programming menus?

Yes, and it's how I got out of In-Line Diagnostic. However I would like to just disable or skip checking for devices, which are not connected. I have plans to connect camera or XM unit, but not now...

Who knows, is it any "low level menu" or config file, which allows to enable/disable some external devices?

Keep us updated.

At this point I don't care about the Bluetooth on the Navi, with the cabin noise it probably won't work as well as a BT headset anyway, however it would be nice to be able to see the caller ID on the Nav, as well as auto-mute the radio on answer.

As for the DVD playback... eh, how often will I really use that.

but for adding a front or rear view camera, I think would be very useful, and a definite mod I would want to do.
I especially wanna add a rear view camera that would activate and display on the nav as soon as you put it in reverse. I think thats how the JDM version works, according to the translation.......... ---> "When you insertin the shifter, it changes to camera image automatically."
Translation result for http://www.honda.co.jp/ACCESS/fit/osusume/cornercamerasystem.html

I guess no one has taken on the trip computer challenge yet..

It would be cool if someone was capable of cracking it..

I'm not 100% sure how much mods I want to hit the working system with. I'll poke around some, but I'd /love/ a rear view backing camera, and that the GPS doesn't double-check the speedometer by default is just stupid. I'd also like speed limit readouts if the map data has them -- I know my father-in-law's gaiman can do that, but I don't know if the navteq stuff we've got has the data.

If you haven't popped the dvd into your computer yet you should. It's just a dual-layer data DVD. With a dual-layer burner and disk you should be able to make a backup copy (which is for purchased software 100% legal as long as you don't share said backup, or attempt to use it simultaneously with the real copy).

I doubt the system is capable of DVD movie playback. That requires, among other things, a decent amount of processing power, which I certainly don't get out of other indications the system having. It is possible there's hardware decode capability in there, but the CPU won't be handling it.

Well I don't know about yours but I went into the settings and checked the gps againt the speedo and they ARE either checking each other or they are just pretty darn close.

I just know if we could get the trip computer functioning, it would be alot more accurate than the BSM honda would like us to believe. Hence what I believe is the whole reason for them to disable it. Good luck with the challenge.

I blame getting backed into while parked. At least that mess is over and I didn't pay a dime. Wish the car didn't smell like fresh paint drying.

I did try burning a backup DVD and using it, not the real DVD, but the system could tell it wasn't authentic. I'll have to try one of the "disk copy" type burning programs and see if it can do it -- got DL burner and DL dvds, so I should be able to clone the thing.

Of course, the authentic check is something in the firmware I could probably alter, but I'd really rather not do it for the first time on the unit in the car. I've discovered I really like it being able to play my music-as-mp3s while driving!

Att: Guitar Trance

Instructions for the 'Splash Screen Hack" can be found at How to hack the 2006 Honda Civic Navigation System
It,s still up and may help you. Remember to follow all the instructions EXACTLY.

Please note: As of now, I don't know of any working fix for the "Nag" screen.

Found this in a Navi folder:

DumpNAVI by bysin
-----------------
This program is used to list, extract, and modify files
contained in an XIP BIN file located on Acura/Honda
navigation DVD. This system has been tested on the
TSX. Use at your own risk.
Some of the things I have been able to modify are:
- Changed the background picture to my own
personal image.
- Removed the "nag screen" at the beginning
screen.
- Change some of the words that pop up.
Here are some step-by-step instructions on how to modify
files in your navigation system. It requires a DVD-ROM
drive and a CD or DVD burner.
1. At the main screen of the navigation system, hold down
the Map/Guide, Menu, and Cancel buttons for 5 seconds.
2. Hit the "Version" button on the touch screen.
3. Hold down the Menu button for 5 seconds.
4. Write down the filename next to the words "Loading
Filename" (ex. BNHN404A.BIN).
5. Open your trunk and find the DVD player attached to
the navigation system.
6. Push down the front plate and eject the Navigation
DVD-ROM.
7. Place the DVD in your computer and copy all 9 BIN
files onto your hard drive (should be around 104 MB),
this includes:
BN2HH12C.BIN
BN2HH110.BIN
BN2HH120.BIN
BN2HHMLD.BIN
BN2HN12B.BIN
BN2HN18B.BIN
BN2HN380.BIN
BNHH401A.BIN
BNHN404A.BIN
8. Use the dumpnavi tool to extract the files on the
BIN file that was on your car, ex:
dumpnavi BNHN404A.BIN extract
9. The files will extract to the directory associated
with the name of the file.
10. After modifying the files, use the dumpnavi tool
to update them to the BIN, ex:
dumpnavi BNHN404A.BIN update Back.bmp
dumpnavi BNHN404A.BIN update navi.exe navi-nonag.exe
dumpnavi BNHN404A.BIN update Diag.exe
11. Copy the modified BIN file, including all other BIN
files (9 in total) to a blank CD or DVD.
12. Insert the origional navigation DVD back into the
DVD-ROM in your car.
13. Start the car normally, and at the main navigation
screen hold Map/Guide, Menu, and Cancel for 5
seconds once again.
14. Hit the "Version" button on the touch screen once
again.
15. Take the origional navigation DVD out of the car,
and replace it with the CD/DVD you just created.
16. Hit the "Load Disc" button on the Version screen.
17. It should take about 20 seconds for your car to
load the new BIN and reboot. Once that happens,
take out your burned CD/DVD and put back the
origional navigation DVD.
18. If anything goes wrong, remove the ground to the
battery for 30 seconds with the origional DVD
in the car. The old OS will load back on the
system.

Strange. I wonder if someone -- like Honda -- shut them down for messing with their "intellectual property?" As in, hacking Honda's copywritten navi CD/DVD, and posting the info for all to see and use? Hey, Apple Computer shuts sites down or threatens people via attorneys with "Case and Desist" orders all of the time for doing similar, and even less acts of coder defiance!

I should have copied the contents for hacking the Honda navi unit before they went away. I was going to take a stab at trying to find all of the goodies and hack whatever I could, now that I have a little free time.

Ah well... if anyone notices the site back online or a change of location, then let me/everyone know by posting in this thread... please!
It was nothing that serious...I just had some issues with the site being ported over to a new hosting provider and I didn't have much time to fix it. Nonetheless, it's back online:

http://www.navihack.com

or

http://navihack.jasonandrepont.com

...gets you to the same place. If anyone needs any assistance or thinks that the site could use some "tweaks", let me know.

Not that I'm aware of. If I were a programmer, I'd try to figure it out myself.
