After I got my first free oil change from the dealer, I decided to do the oil change by myself at 10000 miles. I drove the Fit on a home built ramp about 6 more inches off the ground. Drained the oil. Read the oil capacity on the owner's manual. I mis-read it and used total capacity of engine of 4.4 quarts and filled it up. Later on I found out it should be 3.8 liters with filter for oil change. So I drained 0.6 quart out. (I could not check the oil level while the car is on the ramp). After I got the car off the ramp and checked the oil level with the dip stick. It read about half way below the full line. I re-checked it several times and that's what it was. So I added about 0.4 quart extra and it was all good. The number does not add up. It took me a while to figured it out. The fact that raising the car on the ramp tilted must drained more oil out from the engine. Which will be a good thing since it is a more thorough drain. Something to keep in mind my next oil change.

 

it doesnt have to be exactly full, a little above the middle of the dip stick is good b\c it allows air and room for the oil. but also keep in mind, heat makes the oil expand not sure how much tho :P

 

I guess anywhere between the full and empty line is okay. Above the full will cause foaming. Below the empty will cause starving. But I thought the 3.8 quarts is oil drain + filter change filling it back up to full line. BTW, I always fill it near full line for oil changes on my other cars.

 

I'm sure there is a safe margin above the full line. It would be bad design if it not. Many people have complaint their dealer overfilled their oil and no damage was done.

 

There is also a difference between 4.4 quarts and 3.8 liters. Did you do a conversion? True it is slight, but there is a difference between imperial and metric.

3.8 liters = 4.0154152 US quarts

 

Sorry, it was a typo. It should be 3.8 quarts.

 

I'd just put in 4 quarts, a new oil filter and call it a day.

I doubt that extra .2 quarts will cause any harm.

I never overfill the crankcase, not even by .2 quarts.

When your seals start seeping (or worse), you may rethink overfilling. But, as you say, to each his own.

 

werd. its a 5min processes idk why its so hard for some people.

 

i dont know how you drained it, but easy way would be to use an extractor through the dip stick if you have one.

otherwise you can loosen the oil filter and it will rush out.
quite a mess but easier than trying to stop a draining oil pan.
hahaha if manxman was here, he would've recommended
a fumoto valve.

i used 4qts on my Fit. no issues here. dealers will typically
accidentally(?) overfill anyway.

 

maybe i would too, i ordered one 3 days ago nipple model, i got the hose already, i just need to find the damn hose clip lol i persoanlly think it would be very handy after the DIY oil change/install.

 

i have my garage put in 4 quarts line on dip stick half way to full.

 

question: i have ramps to put the car on, but at what point do i take it off the ramp? i know its gotta be somewhere before your completly finish.. right?

 

i hope it's not before you're out from under the car.

just do the entire service. then roll the car back. that's all. use no more than 4qts. if your anal, you can do 3.5qts (just do half the bottle on the 4th), roll the car off the ramps, let it sit for 5-10min, measure, add, measure, add, measure, add. and find that you poured all 4qts into the engine while wasting time..
