Synthetic oil / first oil change

Synthetic oil / first oil change
Hi !
I just did my first oil change on the Fit (8000 km) and
instead of using the original Honda brand oil, I fill it w/
3,3 l of Mobil 1 synthetic oil (5W20)...
Now my question: am I paying to much for nothing ???
I know that at long term, good quality oil will preserve
the engine (and I beat the little guy) but do you think
that using sinth oil is realy that better that Honda oil ???
I think about long term because I plan to keep the Fit
till it die...
Have a nice evening,
Philippe

Hoo boy what a can 'o worms the oil question is...
Every oil thread will eventually lead to this:

Bob is the oil guy.
I have found the info there, however, to be tiresome and technical as well as cumbersome to sift through.
I am a former synthetic user now opting to change more often with conventional oil. I changed primarily because I wanted to have a new filter more often. The oil might be ok for 10k miles but I don't think the filter will be.

I have never used synthetic oil before the Fit (and never had an engine failure in 32 years of car ownership either). That being said I am using synthetic in my fit, due to the longer change intervals called for by the "maintenance minder". In previous/other cars I always changed my oil at 5K miles (or less if called for by the cars maintenance schedule). With the fit it looks like I will be changing oil every 6.5K to 7K miles so I went with synthetic. Even if you don't use synthetic there is no reason to spend the extra money for Honda brand oil, any major brand (Valvoline, Pennzoil, Castrol, Quaker State, etc.) will do just fine.

I'm running Royal Purple 5w20 and a K&N Filter, I changed over to the synthetic stuff at about 6700 miles. I decided that I'm going to put the best I can in this car at least if I can see a difference I will. The oil I drained out of the car was not black, I was impressed that with almost 7k miles on it that it was still more of a gold, granted quite dark but not black. I also got Royal Purple for the transmission, I will change that out this or next weekend. I've used Red Line Oil products in the past with great success but I'd heard very good things about Royal Purple so figured I'd give it a try. Price wise they're about the same.
