GE Fit Maintenance

I'm getting conflicting messages from my dealer and other sources about the recommended way to care for your FIT. On the one hand, the dealer says that I should be getting certain maintenance every certain number of miles (such as 10k service, 15k service, 30k service etc). On the other, I've been told that all I really need to do is pay attention to the maintenance minder in the car. So far, that is what I have been doing with my oil changes, changing the oil when it gets to 20 - 15%.

So far I have about 30k miles on the car and have just recently seen the codes "A 12" on the maintenance minder. These are the first codes I have seen (I usually change my oil at about 20%).

So, I guess my question is, should I be doing the mileage maintenance (10k 20k 30k miles) or just paying attention to the MM? Seeing my first codes on the MM at 30k miles makes me a little worried that I'm missing something...

Thanks!

EDIT: I do 95% of my driving on the freeway, so I've only had to change the oil 3 times so far at 30k miles. I've heard that if you change your oil before the 15% and then reset the gauge, you might not see the maintenance codes? This last oil change was the first time that I let the oil life get to 15% and is the first time I have seen any codes.

The funny thing was I was in ur same situation but with my 1st oil change and the thing is I got a coupon book that gave me discount prices for oil changes at the 5k-10k-15k mark for oil changes and I was gonna do that but when I went to Honda they told me that the coupon book was old and not to follow that , they told me to follow the maintenance minder so I said aight and if something goes wrong or anything pops up, I call and tell em to see what's good

Thanks, that thread didn't answer my question. And what am I supposed to search for, "newbie"? I searched for "maintenance" and other similar terms and nothing definitive came up. So apologies for trying I guess.

Anyone else have something helpful to contribute?

Not trying to be mean, just trying to figure out the best and most logical way to care for my car.

I wish the MM remained an idea in the board room...

I have made the decision to follow the maintenance minder. I am at 11,600 miles and recently had my 2nd oil change and tire rotation. My minder has hit the 15% level after driving approx. 5400 miles each oil change. I have noticed the dealer puts a sticky on my windshield showing next oil change due in 5000 miles. If the MM is what Honda intends the owner to follow--why is the dealer confusing things with the sticky??!

Since I am hitting around the 5000 mile mark so far with the MM anyway--guess I will just ignore the dealer recommendations unless they can give me good reason not to.

You are driving 10,000 miles between oil changes? Wow! Hondas are amazing cars. I guess the highway driving you do is easier on the engine than stop and go driving would be.

My vote is to stick with the MM. I trust that Honda Motor Corp. invented the MM system to help consumers with the care of their Hondas, and not to somehow jeopardize the long life Hondas are known for. After all, as another poster put it, Honda's reputation for reliability is on the line. I doubt they would employ a system that undermines it!

i tend to agree with this. this is not an exotic car, nor is it one prone to break. read the owners manual. follow it. not sure where questions lie in that.

just because an establishment sells something doesnt mean they know anything about it. ever take a computer to best buy to be fixed? hahaha.

I have 30k with mostly fwy driving and I am doing my 3rd oil change this weekend. I usually stick with the MM and change at 15% so I can see the codes. I also switched to synthetic at 10k and do my tire rotations and fluids check every 10k also. The thing that I'm looking at this weekend is to check if I need new brake pads.

follow the manufacturer's maintenance recommendation, not your dealers. dealers are out to make money on service.... a lot of times, service that is not necessary.

I did my first oil change early because I was going on a long road trip and wanted to make sure to get it done before so I wouldn't worry about it while traveling. That was at 6500 miles.

My second one was just recently when I hit just below 15k(maybe about 14800) and I got the 15k maintenance done at the dealership. They also suggested to change my brake pads.

Total:

$600

My next oil change will be when I hit 15%
