Engine Oil Life Indicator
#22
I just hit 9,000 miles and the oil life shows 30% left. I expect that to drop to 20% in the next few hundred miles.
My commute is about 20 miles with 5 stop lights, and about 10 of that is highway with no lights.
I'll probably change the oil at 10K :-)
Meanwhile, 7 months and 9k, and got the first scratch from some numbnuts that doesn't know how to operate a car door. I think Scratch-X will take it out. Wish I had caught them doing it tho...

Changing your oil every 5k with a top-quality synthetic is a waste of money, not good for the environment, and will not protect your car any better.
If you want to know just how long you can run a particular oil, invest in a UOA or two. This will tell you how long the oil you use can really be run in your car and its driving conditions. Over time it will save you money, because you'll likely find you can safely run the oil considerably longer than you thought.
The maintenance minders are helpful though; they generally err on the side of caution but are helpful in that they calculate your oil life based on the conditions your car experiences. Use it as a guide.

A 20 mile commute with only 5 stop lights, that sounds like a great commute. Mine's 25 miles with 12 stop lights and 2 stop signs.

They are not necessarily short trips, but I think it's due to often running into traffic jams both in freeways and streets, and getting many red lights in streets. What irritates me the most is seeing my MPG decrease. I think I could by averaging low 40s if it wasn't for these things.

Same here, just over 8,000 and just turned 30%. Relatively few short trips, mostly highway miles.
I'm a bit concerned about the oil life indicator. I've put on 8,000 miles since I bought the new Fit in December, mostly highway driving, and the indicator shows it still has 30% oil life.
I called the service dept and was informed that I don't need an oil change until the quality falls to 10%. Is that normal?

Mine's at 50% at 3750 mi. I'll probably change it in a month or so before I take a 4000 mile round trip to the Midwest. I won't have any time to do an oil change on the trip, and I have some JDM Honda oil from a friend in Japan to try out as an experiment. Normally I'll be running Toyota 0w-20 because it's damned good stuff.

50% at 3400 miles.
I'm taking a long trip (at east 2000 miles) in July, so I'll probably get the oil changed and tires rotated before the trip. Right before the trip I will probably be around 5500 to 6000 miles with who knows what percent left - my guess is 30%.

You are falling for the :
promoted by the "quick oil-change industry" and service departments that want a car in a bay more often to sell more unneeded services.

I do a lot of short trips 1 miles and less so I was thinking chasing the oil every 5 miles since my fit doesn't have mind minder and based on the edmun link you posted if seems accurate for short trips local driving.
Any suggestion?
