Loose lug nuts will damage the threads on the lug bolts. Check the threads and even 'chase' them with female thread die to make sure they are good. And make sure when you torque the nuts to 95 lb-ft that they hold tight.
We don't associate a popping noise with a loose wheel either. Its the 'wobble' that gets our attention.
