I've heard that the message will go away after about 1-3 full tanks of gas. If it doesn't leave by then, ECU reset (disconnect battery for 5 minutes) and it will clear it.
I get that "Check Gas Cap" message once in a while. It always clears by itself after a day or two. It has nothing to do with the gas cap. I believe it has to do with the fuel trim/map and injectors.
I would love to get some more info regarding this error
" "Check Fuel Cap"
Hey, I drive an 08 USDM AT Fit. Today I drove the car to school (arrived about 7:00 am) and had no "check fuel cap" message. After school (around 11:30) the message was there. Filled gas last Wednesday (week ago) and already checked to see the fuel cap. (Clicked it like 4 or 5 times).
Any help?
Thanks for your time
Umar
EDIT:
So, within minutes of posting, I figured out how to fix it. Not to sure however what caused it. For those interested:
1) Turn off car
2) Remove gas cap
3) Start up car
4) Put gas cap on
5) Done"
I had that message come up once. I forget the exact sequence of events but they involved removing and replacing the gas cap and restarting the car, and the light did clear. And no my gas cap was not loose.
are you using the OEM gas cap or an aftermarket locking one? just in case you didn't know, it won't necessarily clear the "check gas cap" message immediately after you fully tighten the gas cap. i had it happen too, after using a stant locking cap for a little over 2 years. the cap was on tight, but after a day i switched back to my stock cap and the msg cleared a day later or so. then i replaced it with another locking cap and it's been all good so far. just don't worry if it doesn't clear right away, i think it just depends on when your car runs a fuel system check at startup again.
