'07 sport needs new all season tires

My 2007 Sport again needs some new tires, 195/55 R15s come up in searches for the stock wheels.

I drive in a mostly mellow manner with a lot of highway driving around Seattle 30 miles to work and back most days. It snows a few days a year and usually not much but on those days I'm likely to have to drive to work. Lots of rain of course. My fit is relatively noisy with my current mix matched set of tires and that would be nice to tone down.

Easy for me is Discount Tire, Firestone and Les Schwab. They all sell recommend their in house tires for $89 plus installation taking a full set up to around $500. I could pay more if I were to get more.

The Honda dealer recommended an R-16 summer performance tire, which I queried and found they don't advise all season tires.

Dealer also recommended an alignment, might that be advisable once I get the new tires on? I've got 185K miles on this mostly trouble free Fit.

Thank you.

All-season are fine. Pretty sure the OEM tire is an all-season. The Fit is not a performance car.
When was the last time you had an alignment?

I got Kumho Ecsta PA31s recently off of tire rack for $77 per tire! They'll ship to practically any installer (they sort them by cost of install) and it only took 2-3days for them to arrive. I live in Portland so the weather situation is relatively similar to Seattle and they've been doing really great for me. For reviews, they have a highlight in wet terrain grip and I personally can attest to that. And I would definitely recommend getting an alignment with the new tires it'll definitely help with drivabilty and comfort.

For noise, I had BF Goodrich super sports on prior and they're a little quieter than those but not a whole lot. 1st gens kinda have a lot of road noise in general imo. I would imagine it'd be quieter than having mismatches on though

If you're going with All Seasons, get good All Season tires. I've tried a bunch and the best I've yet experienced are the Michelin Premier A/S:
https://www.michelinman.com/tires/pr...emier-a-s.html

I used to buy the best-rated budget all-seasons (tires like the Kumho Ecsta ASX), and they were always loud and the grip was mediocre, especially in wet. These Michelins made the car feel so much quieter and handle more responsively, to the extent that I started looking at suspension upgrades as the tire grip was no longer the limiting factor.

Thank you Jared for the tip on the Michelins from Nebraska! They are not too much more I see on Tire Rack at $118 and I'll see what the local garages will ask for them.

I've just spent an hour sorting my service records into a binder. I've had a fair amount of trouble with the Firestone's I got before though I did get one replaced under warranty. Their warrantee's are confusing but I think I have lifetime balancing but that is like $5 per tire.

Thank you Cojaro. The last time I see an alignment was way back at 53K so I'm thinking here at 185K miles I should get one, that seems a good while. I don't see particularly uneven wear on the tires I have now but I have had them rotated regularly. Firestone will do a free inspection and then recommend, I'll have to consider if I want a lifetime or a onetime alignment I think if I go there. They are tempting as I can walk back and forth from their shop.

The other thing that sticks out from review of my records is that dealer service I just had for coolent replacement because of a low level was done a year and a half ago in Feb 2019 so I'll watch for a slow leak there, and <sigh>, trust the new dealer place I just went to a bit less.

Belated thanks for the reply 503GD3. Portland weather being very similar I would have looked at the Kumhos had I not overlooked your post.

I ordered the Michelin Premier A/S online at discount tire and scheduled an appointment for five days later when they put them on.

Though I'd looked harder over my service records and found an alignment at 100K I've hit plenty of potholes in that time so the next day I went to firestone for an alignment, the report showed a couple of settings had been out. In fact looking at it closely now I think it shows my left rear toe is still out with a Actual of 0.22 for a specified range of 0.00 to 0.20 degrees. I'll call to find out what the deal was there if they didn't have any play to adjust it or if it was considered close enough. They didn't spend much time on it. The rear total toe is well within 0.0 - 0.39 spec at .23.

Both shops were surprisingly busy, I figure with public transportation at 20% use at most because of the pandemic and general traffic at about 80% here people are putting more miles on their cars lately. Or perhaps its just the switch over to winter tires season.

New tires feel great going over highway grooves that used to bother me as well as pretty hard rain and on one very sudden stop, partly I'm sure because I was pushing the old firestone house brand pretty far.

I used a phone loudness meter to check noise in approximately the same highway driving conditions and no measurable change there between old and new tires about 75db in the cabin.

Thanks again for the help.

Always nice to have new "shoes."

The rear is not really adjustable on the Fit. Make sure to never pay for a 4-wheel alignment because the only two ways to actually align the rear are 1. use specialty shims that they would need to order ahead of time and charge to install or 2. heat and bend the rear beam. No shop will do either of those without discussing the procedure and charging extra.

Thank you GAFIT for the knowledge the rear is fixed in one dimension the sales guy tried to tell me there was not too much to do. When I looked back at the dealer alignment it looked like they'd tolerate up to 0.25 so I'm runnin' free!

I did not have good luck with the Michelin Premier A/S on two vehicles, my 07 Fit and our 2013 Odyssey. I'd become a Michelin man after installing a set of Michelin Pilot Exalto A/S after the oem Dunlops and a set of Sumitomos lasted only 30k miles. The Michelins were grippy, quiet, excellent in snow, and wore well. I got 60k miles and warranty was only 45k. I replaced with the Michelin Premier as the Exaltos were no longer available and the Premiers had just been released. The warranty was 60k miles so I figured if these wore like the last set of Michelin then I'd get maybe 70-80k. The Premiers had all the same good qualities as the Exaltos, except they wore quickly. At 45k I was down to 4/32 and heading into winter. I spoke to Costco tire about the wear rate and they wouldn't consider it until tires were 2/32. I wasn't going to drive on unsafe tires in winter so decided to go away from Michelin. Our Odyssey only got 40k miles presumably because it's a heavier vehicle and we load it up on many trips. Went with the General Altimax RT43 on both vehicles and have been pleased with wear. They've been excellent in snow and wet, maybe a little louder, not as grippy in corners but I don't drive like that anymore so not concerned about that aspect.
