Won't shift

Hi everyone, my manual Fit will barely shift gears. The car was running fine... we went on a week's vacation and after coming back, maybe in the third day the car was barely shifting gears. You had to really force it. It's been parked since it's unsafe to drive now.

I'm able to move it if I really force it into gear, but I feel like something is going to brake. I took the battery out today to look at the shifter cable and it looks fine.

Something weird is that if I turn the car off, then engage the clutch it shifts easily.

Is the clutch toast?

That would be my guess, or maybe the slave/master cylinder. There is a small hatch on the bell housing that you can open and maybe see what's going on inside while someone pushes the pedal.

Mine refused to shift at all one day. Bought it used so don't know how previous owner abused it or mishandled it. Yeah...it could shift with no engine running but does not need the clutch to do that. I thought(or wanted to believe) it was the hydraulic actuation, master or slave, and replaced them, but no dice. Still wouldn't shift. Then replaced the clutch and everything worked again.

......funny, I did not see any damage on stock clutch. But new one worked.

Thanks everyone, I figured it was the clutch, but was hoping it wasn't. I'm guessing I'm looking at $1,500?

You'll have to convert to CA$, but the Exedy OEM clutch kit is part #HCK1006 and is $121 at RockAuto. Install at most shops in the US is around $600.
