Am I getting bad fuel economy?

I am sorry if there is already an answer for this in the forum.

I am quite shocked how little mileage I get on my 2008 Fit LX. I do a lot of hwy driving around 120 km per hour. Yes I am in Canada It does seem like the RPMs are high, is this normal for a fit? I believe there are between 3 to 4 thousand. I seem to barely get 500 km per tank. And that might be generous. I would appreciate any thought

Its your driving style and you won't get good gas mileage with 120km/h. You will need to slow down to get better gas mileage. Try running 80km/h to 95km/h with slow acceleration and slow braking.

That's normal... for the non-SI literate folks that's about 75 mph and 310 mi/tank

Should be around 3600 rpm at that speed if it's a manual, blame the short 5th gear and that fun 4.26 FD

The fit seems to get crappy mileage until you look at the number on the receipt since the gas tank is so small. It's almost as bad as driving a motorcycle. Heck on mine filling from when the needle is dancing on "E" until pump clicks off is usually 7-8 gal or so (about 30L), and I can count the number of tanks over 300 miles on one hand, partly due to never running it down that far. Realistically the car still has a quarter tank in it but the gauge races to the "E" too fast.

That speed you described is the condition I get the worst gas mileage at. I commute less than 3 miles to work and I guarantee a 3 mpg or more drop from my daily driving mileage driving at that speed. The car tends to get 34-37 mpg commuting, 35-42 mpg driving 55-60 mph [~80-90kph], and 31-33 mpg at 75 mph, under my driving habits.

i find that driving at 100 or slightly under gives the best fuel economy. In my GE, once i hit about 110 km the fuel economy guage shoots up to close to 10 L per 100 km. It would make sense since i do feel that i have to give the pedal quite a bigger push to get the car going past 110 km/h and the rev gets up there to mid to hi 3000rpm. I would say try driving a bit slower on the highway and refrain from quick starts. You should be able to get at least 550 per tank. Plus its winter right now and the cold weather hurts gas mileage.
Don't worry, you might be getting bad fuel economy, but its just probably a combination of factors.

Should be par for the course methinks, given how fast you're driving.

Aggressive driving kills the GD's fuel economy - I can personally attest to that. I've never broken the 460 km mark to a tank, and this is with the smaller, more efficient L13A engine, mind you.

Breaking 100 km/h as mentioned also turns our L-series engines from fuel sippers into fuel guzzlers. Push 150 km/h in a burst and you'll be surprised how thirsty the GD can get.

These days I'm grateful when I make 400. I know I'm not going to win any fuel-efficiency challenges with the way I drive but I'm okay with it. I'm still making more kilometers per liter with my GD1 (11-12) than with my old EF Civic-based SX8 Honda City with a D15B7 under the hood (9-10).

My driving, as a pizza guy, varies so much because I suck down almost a full tank everytime Im working and almost always in stop and go traffic.

I can never really pinpoint what my exact mileage is, but i usually get up around 200+ miles per tank. Never had the opportunity to reach over 300 yet.

You didn't tell us what gas mileage you're getting or how many gallons(liters) you refill in 500 km (310 mi).
Despite many posts here the half-dozen Fits here average close to 30 mpg (13 km/L) in mixed highway/urban driving. The AT's get a little less in town but better on the interstate (40 vs 35 mpg)
If you're refilling with 8-9 gallons US in 310 miles you're doing as good as anyone we have good data on. (35+ mpg, 15+ km/L) Driving a lot at 70-75 mph you get good gas mileage.
As for 3500 cruising rpm remember its a small engine so more rpm is needed to get power. Compare the Fit to number of 1500 cc motorcycles that have ropm limits of 12.000 while the Fit is 6500. High rpm is not a indication of poor reliability.
